1170.0. "Leather seats question" by VOGON::COLE (Mike, TPAG Product management, 830-6571) Tue Jul 31 1990 14:25

HELP . . . .

I have a decision problem. On the point of ordering optional leather seats
in a Rover 214, I have conflicting comment.

1 I got some good advice from a friend (who has them) saying that they are
a "pain" in the hot weather, literally. My family are also wary of me
  and brand new leather seats.

Will the upholstery stand up to a young family. How are they cleaned

2 I am also told that they are cooler, and better that velour. And look smart.

Is there some other informed opinions which can advise me please.

And I need to order . . . . . . . .

    Hi there,
My colleague has an MR2 with leather seats and he says:

"I am not too familiar with the leather seats in the Rover but speaking
from experience with the leather seats in the Toyota I would go for
    it."
"easy to clean, very comfy and although they do get a tad warm in
direct sunlight they do cool down fairly quickly as long as you
remember not to sit down straight away whilst wearing shorts (remove
your shirt and sit on that!)"
"They also make the car smell great"

    Huw.

1170.2I vote for velour. VANDAL::BROWNMTue Jul 31 1990 15:007
I have leather seats in my Saab and I think that I would prefer the velour.
They smell nice and are reasonably comfortable but do get hot in the sun. They
are easy to clean and stand up to the family well or badly depending on the age
of the family. It's easier to wipe sick off leather, but it is also easy to
scuff it!

My fave are leather side pieces with fabric centre piece. Looks and smells
nice, but the fabric stays cool in the sun...

Don't know if you can get this for the Rover though. "Cobra" make some for
110, which may be cheaper than Rover.

I went through the same, I ended up ordering them for my 416GSi.
    Reasons,

We only get that hot sun for a couple of months a year. You
can chuck a towel or something over them if it get's that bad.

They look a lot nicer than the velour ones.

I wanted power steering and electric rear windows, so it was natural to
get the luxury pack, saving money on the combination.

    I fancy posing anyway!.

I found the leather seats in my old Jag a bit slippery. Since
there was little/no side support, it was possible to end up
with the passenger on your lap :-) :-) ... could be considered
    as an advantage on occassions.

Won't get this on the rover (shame? :-)) The seats have these neat
support 'ears' on the squab and backrest.

1170.7Leather dye?KERNEL::BARNARDPSpikeWed Oct 11 1995 19:5713

I know this is an old note however,

I have recently purchased a car with leather seats that are a little
worn ( brown showing through the black in parts ). Does anyone know of
a product to re-dye the leather again, I have considered using leather
dye from a cobbler but I am worried it'll come off on my trousers etc.

    Regards

I might consider doing a swap if you can find me a vinyl roof!

Connolly's do a kit for re-doing leather seats. If you snip off a small
piece of leather from underneath the seat and send it off, they will
mail you back a jar of dye-stuff, and some leather food. It's pretty
easy to do if one takes care. I'm sorry, but I don't have a contact
name or number; I suggest you try EYP.

    Cheers, Laurie.

    RE: EYP

Sorry, it was rude of me to assume you'd know what it means. It means
    Electronic Yellow Pages.

As for location, erm... sorry, I have no idea! However, I'm pretty sure
    it's Connolly with 2 Ns.

    Cheers, Laurie.
