1152.0. "Low Mileage?" by PLAYER::KENNEDY_C (The same old clich) Tue Jul 17 1990 13:38
From Cars for sale:
 F Reg. Honda CRX 1.6i 16v
 Gleaming Red. Only 1,200 miles. Always garaged, never used in the
 wet. Full service history. Extras.
Not wanting to upset Garry, though I'm sure I will, but is 1200 miles healthy
for the car for over a years driving?
The 944 Turbo I just sold, had 44,000 Kms on over 4 years, and it gave me a
few teething problems in the first few thousand Kms, because it hadn't been
used properly. I ran it for 15,000 Kms in 3 months, oil consumption dropped
from 1,000 kms per litre to 3,000 and dropping. It needed the old boot being
put down to work properly.
Had teething problems (Ok only 1, the Lambda sensor) on 1 yr old 911, which
had only 8,000 kms on it.
The old man had a 520 BMW, it was 6 years old when he bought it, 20,000 miles.
Again it was pampered. The old man gets into it and drives like the standard
Kennedy loony. The engine packs in after 2,000 miles. BMW tell us that they had
a problem with the engine back when, and most packed in and got replaced
within the warranty period.
This 20,000 km 205 has been standing in a field for the past 3 months, and
originally lived in Oslo. Looks like it will need new discs, fairly pronto!
Not sure if Garry meant 12,000 miles, but what service history can a car have
in 1,200 miles????
I reckon cars should actually be used, and enjoyed, or is this conference
the wrong one to be in?

1152.1 | Regular excercise keeps them fit! | UKCSSE::RDAVIES | Live long and prosper | Tue Jul 17 1990 14:15 | 18 |
| Must say I agree with you about engine's needing to be used regularly
to get the most out of them. I compare it to a person: if you don't
excercise regularly, then you can manage a gentle meander, but not a
quick sprint. If you keep yourself fit, then a sprint presents no
problem.
I find this about my cars: I drive spiritedly, excersing the car. It's
often observed that I seem to get more out of a car than a similar
model can manage.
I believe that "one lady owner who only used it on sunday's to go to
church" can be a good indication of a car that should be avoided. One
of the best second hand car's I ever bought was one I knew for definite
had been a company car and had done maybe 40k in the first 2 years, but
had been well serviced. I had no trouble with that car during the two
years I had it.

1152.2 | | YENREF::KEHILY | Almost... | Tue Jul 17 1990 15:15 | 11 |
| I would agree with the comments made so far. A friend at Uni bought
a Mini with a low mileage (40000km in 5 years from memory), all
very good condition but permanently going through cylinder head
gaskets. In the end he had to replace the engine, the garage
mechanic's opinion was that it had not been properly run in.
The normal running in method of 'take it easy for 1000-km then
ignore it' is no good for a car, they have to be made to work more
and more over the running in period and then beyond.

1152.3 | 12months = 25,000m | VANISH::BOSLEY | | Wed Jul 18 1990 15:49 | 8 |
| Yep,
You have got to use the car as your body. Treate it well and you
will see the benifit. My Panda is just 3 years old, but in the last 12
months I have done 25,000 miles. I still get 50mpg just running around
town.
My car is like an extra stomach I feed it and it feeds me!!!
