| A simple test would be to put in higher octane fuel and see if the
condition disappears.

I use 4* as it is.
Would it be worthwhile checking the tappets ?

Most likely is that the ignition is set too far advanced.
The "spring" you are talking about could be for the automatic
advance retard mechanism (if it has one). This/these can become weak
and require replacement.
Best solution: get the ignition timing and dwell angle checked.

| If you have the 1300cc 70bhp engine, they are renowned for this
problem, there is not much you can do about the run-on - the pinking
varies according to the make of fuel you use. When I had an MG Metro
(same engine) I seem to remember that ESSO fuel was noticeably better
at surpressing the pinking.

RE.3
>>Cures for pinking.1)Take the head off and give it a good
cleaning.2)use Redex or some other proprietary decarbonizing compound.
I've tried using Redex twice, the first time I left it in for half an
hour, and the second time I left it in overnight. The pinking has reduced
slightly, but I still get the "Chain rattling noise" between 2300-2600
rpm.Is it worth me using redex again? if so for how long?.Or can anyone
suggest another decarbonizing compound!
Thanks in advance
Andy....
P.S. Is it easy to clean the cylinder head myself?

Guys,
Could I ask a small favor. Are there any of you knowledgable noters
that work at Winnersh triangle,or Dec park? As I would like to borrow
someone for a few minutes to listen to my "suspect pinking".I would
take it to my local garage but it's full of youngsters who seem to
think that at the first sign of a drop of fresh oil means a new head
gasket.
Anyone available one lunchtime for a few mo's.
Thanks
Andy.
