Over the past couple of days I've noticed quite a few cars sat on roundabouts (M3 Hook and M3 Basingstoke plus the next one up from the M3 in Basingstoke) counting cars, and a proper census (police in attendance) on the road that runs parallel to the M4 on the opposite side to Shire Hall (the one with the six bells on it), handing sheets out to cars coming away from the M4 junction). One of the lanes through shinfield is already access only, are they going to do this one to (hope not!). Nigel.

1101.1 | National Road Survey | IOSG::MARSHALL | Argle Bargle IV | Fri Jun 08 1990 15:17 | 13 |
There is currently a national road survey in progress, with a hi-tech van driving around every major road in Britain videoing the journey! Maybe the car-counting is part of the same survey? For general information: The square studs, about 4 inches across, that sit in pairs in the middle of the left-hand lane on motorways (and probably other roads too) are also part of the survey. The roads have been split into sections, with the studs marking the section boundaries. Some of the above mentioned hi-tech gadgetry senses these studs (reflected light, I think) and annotates the video with road-section identifiers and accurate distances. Scott | |||||

In Ringwood, on the main A31, this morning, in the rush-hour, I sat ans fumed in a tail-back for 45 minutes, and, when I got to the head of it, I found that it was caused by a traffic census !!!!!!! Aarggh ! "Good morning, sir, I wonder if I could ask you how long your journey is this morning.......?" |
