1092.0. "GTE 16V Constipated?" by BELFST::GROSSIE () Wed May 30 1990 18:57

Hi there folks, has anyone out there taken delivery on a 1990 Spec.
    ASTRA GTE 16V as yet?

I have just recently handed in my July 1988 GTE 16V with 53,000
miles on the clock, and picked up the 'new' catalytic convertion
edition! What a disapointment. The difference in performance is
simply unbelievable. Acceleration no longer exists, and there isn't
even a harsh rasp out of the exhaust anymore.

This being the case, major surgery will have to carried out to remove
the catalytic converter. Does anyone know how this could be acheived
avoiding having to buy a new exhaust system? I have heard that some
car conversion companies already supply bolt in bypass pipes for
the likes of the Rover 800 series.

I would strongly recommend that you drive one of the newer GTE 16V
before considering it, especially if you had one of the real ones
    before hand.

I would appreciate any help or guidance on this topic.

Best regards,	Charlie Grossie.	DEC Belfast

Just spoken to the latest Vauxhall dealer, a "Cat" is indeed standard
now. I was told that there is no effect on performance (I dont believe
that in view of the comments in .0 and the press remarks about the
"cat" 16V Cavalier). Would use of "supergreen" boost performance ?

When I picked mine up in August '89 the catalogue said that the
Opel Keadett GSi 16V had a cat as standard and the Astra equivalent
did not! Is yours an Astra or a Kadett?

In the May 1990 price list it says the 'cat' is now standard.

At what rpm does the rev limiter cut in on a Cat equipped Astra 16v and
    a non-cat version?

I know it's not the right Vauxhall, but despite the aspersions Derek has
been casting, you can't get into the red on the Nova GTE the cutout
operates at about 6000rpm.
