I have been offered a performance exhaust system for my VW Beetle, with
dual "quietpack" end boxes, the thing is, that it has been off of a
car for about 4 months, and stored in a garage. Will it be any use? or
will the insides have been reduced to powder by the sands of time.....
as a couple of people have told me?
Incidently, before anyone says "performance"... Beetle?
Because of the massive restrictions the standard Beetle silencer puts
on the breathing of the flat 4 engine, the similar exhaust gives
approx. 8 extra bhp, which on an engine which started at 44bhp cant be
bad!

| 1082.1 | Do try these pipes out! | SHIRE::MEYER | I'd rather be sailing & trouting | Fri May 25 1990 08:04 | 14 |
I would try them out. What really eats up exhaust systems is short
journeys where you end up with a still cold Ex-pipes with acidy fumes
condensates still drip out at the end of your short journey.
On a longer or faster run your exhaust pipe is hot & dry. Should you
only travel on this sort of run, your Ex pipe will last for a few years
more.
The fact that these pipes have been in storage will in no way be any
worse off, than if they had stayed on the original car.
Nothing ventured-nothing gained, so try them out.
Good luck. NM

Thanks for the advice, I took it and gave the guy some beer money for
a complete system, and fitted it on my day off yesterday,
After reassuring myself that;
a) the crap that was coming out of the 2 endpipes was nothing to do
with the engine, but the exhaust !.
b) This black smoke was infact soot which had become dislodged when
fitting the exhaust, and not the rusty remains of the inards of the
system making its bid for freedom !
It runs well, sounds sweeter, and smoother than the standard exhaust,
and the car seems alot happier at around 75mph+ than it ever used to.
oh yes.... looks good aswell !
