Have we all seen Tomorrows Wordl/National Press advertising the fact
tha Saab have just/are about to introdcue a car with no steering wheel
?.
Instead there is a joy-stick contraption that is linked to the speed of
the car. At slow speeds you pull the stick to one side and the wheels
turn as per normal. Do the same at 60 m.p.h and the wheels only turn a
fraction. The indicator etc. stalk is located in the drivers dool panel
- forward for left, back for right etc.
No obstruction in front of the driver - the logic being that in a head
on crash a large percentage of accidents are caused by driver contact
with the steering wheel. Of course it's got an airbag.

re: .1
I saw TW, but they said that this was a research project and there
would NOT be any production cars using that (particular) technology
on the road this century.
Of course, there may be another group doing steer-by-wire.

Err.. the joystick was located in the centre of the car, where the gear
stick usually is
So I can only deduce you drive a car in a very stange way!!!!

| Re.4:
It sound's more like the offset joystick used in the Airbus, etc,
although that would mean that you'd have to use only one hand for
steering, so no opening the window as you're approaching a toll-booth
unless you've got electric windows, etc...
No, it still sounds like a daft idea to me too...

There would be one good thing about it, i.e. if the joy stick is
situated in the middle of the car, then with some additional controls,
the car could be driven from either of the front seat, thus aleviating
the problem we Brits have when we have to drive on the wrong side of
the road like all our ECC cousins ( et al ).
