1030.0. "Optional Ash Trays!" by LARVAE::BRIGGS (They use computers don't they?) Wed Apr 18 1990 10:53

There used to be a time when people jokingly talked about certain cars
where even the ashtrays were extra (eg BMWs). Well I think the time has
come where this should not be taken so lightly.

As a non smoker (and I seem to be in a majority these days) I think
there really is a case for optional ash trays. I would
prefer the space to be used for casettes, odds and ends etc etc.
Actually if car designers put a bit more thought into it they could
make dual purpose fittings (not at the same time of course!).

Anyone any views? Do any manufacturers actually DO this. Alternatively,
is there a living to be made in making plug compatible units for common
cars to replace the ashtrays with casette holders, money holders etc
etc? Does someone already DO this?

Same here, I've always used mine for petrol receipts and things like that,
they seem to be perfectly sized for that sort of thing ... I'm glad they
fit them!!

I used to work in a Vauxhall garage which shall remain nameless and we
had quite a lot of people come in to have the ashtray replaced by a
plain plastic panel bit stupid I thought paying people to remove
    equipment from your car.

In spite of being a pipe and cigar smoker I will not allow smoking in
the car until it is at least 24 months old. (and then only in moments
of great weakness whilst watching BMX racing in the rain). I find,
however, that the ash tray makes a marvelous repository for toffee
papers etc. What is much more wastful is the rear ash-tray.

Saab cars with the optional CD player ICE equipment do not have an ashtray in
front, and have a small no smoking sign where the cigar lighter normally goes.

I don't smoke and so I tend to use the ashtray for junk like sweet wrappers etc.
One day I was giving somebody a lift who asked if I minded him smoking - I
didn't so I drove on for a bit until I noticed smoke coming out of the fascia!
Opening the ashtray revealed a nice little bonfire of tofee papers burning away
quite happily.

So, its a good idea to only use it as an ashtray or a junk holder at any given
time...!

I smoke quite heavily and all my company cars have been fitted with
ashtrays. I'm right handed, however, and it's here my ciggie smoulders.
Ashtrays in UK vehicles are invariably on the L.H.S. of the driver.

Result is steadily growing pile of ash in drivers footwell and on
drivers right knee. Strangely, few people ask for a second ride
in my car. Smoking passengers are discouraged from using the ashtray
and requested to use their own footwell; this saves clearing the
ashtray out at the bi-annual clean-up.

ashtrays always seem to be very near air vents... resulting in most of the ash
blowing back towards you...!

I am suprised that anyone would admit to driving while smoking, as this is
a very dangerous thing to do.

re.10:

> why?

Safe driving takes all of your concentration. The smoker who drives may
have one or more of the following distractions;

1. Fumbling for a cigarette from it's packet
2. Placing cigarette in mouth
3. Reaching for ignition device
4. Bringing ignition device to cigarette tip
5. Dropping hot ignition device in lap
6. Depositing ash in preferred location (ashtray, floor or window)
7. Screams of backseat passenger as hot ash, blown back through window,
   hits them in the eye.
8. Dropping lighted cigarette in lap.
9. Smoke impairs vision.
10. Nicotine alters reactions.
11. Reaching for ashtray to stub out cigarette.
12. Sharing cigarettes amongst passengers.
13. Holding cigarette in hand while trying to operate one or more car
    controls
14. Horn from car behind because discarded cigarette has just bounced off
    his bonnet.

I'm sure there is more.

Dave.

people that throw anything out of car windows.... whether it's cigs
