1011.0. "Mercedes-Benz/Daimler-Steyr-Puch G-wagen" by BRABAM::PHILPOTT (Col I F 'Tsingtao Dhum' Philpott) Fri Apr 06 1990 08:59

I have two questions for Mercedes experts. I asked my local dealer but he said
"we don't discuss future product availability"... I guess I don't qualify for
the PID :-)

1) When will the restyled (and re-engined) G-wagens go on sale in Britain.

2) Will the soft-top variant be freely available?

---

I drove two soft-tops recently (a short wheelbase and a long wheelbase) and was
quite impressed [the army are currently holding extensive trials to select two
new 4x4 light vehicles to replace the aging fleet of Land Rovers - current front
runners are the G-wagen and the UMM Alter II incidentally]

   Aren't they considering _new_ Land Rovers?

Yes - as well as Volvos, Fiats, and half a dozen others. But at the moment the
Landy is running third (price I'm afraid: it costs more than the UMM). However
its a long way from the finish line, and they haven't started tests on the
Discovery yet.

1011.3What kind of military sense is that?RUTILE::WILCOCKSONpooped againFri Apr 06 1990 14:316
    I've never really understood the point in an army buying anything
    other than the stuff made in the country its defending.
    There can't be much to choose between the new Land Rovers and the
    Mercs anyway. I wouldn't blame the German army for choosing Mercs,
    but I think the British army ought to buy British, especially in
    a case where the British product is on par with the foreign competition.

    I know that this is a rathole, but whilst we are on the subject, the
    Australian Army has just purchased hundreds of LWB Isuzu diesel engined
    LR's. The Mercedes' were considered, Toyota did not offer a vehicle.
    They are reportedly considering a six-wheel drive version of the LR for
    slightly heavier duties. But, the real heavy duty truck is the MB
    Unimog. (I want one too!!!)
