>> the army are currently holding extensive trials to select two
>> new 4x4 light vehicles to replace the aging fleet of Land Rovers - current front
Aren't they considering _new_ Land Rovers?

Yes - as well as Volvos, Fiats, and half a dozen others. But at the moment the
Landy is running third (price I'm afraid: it costs more than the UMM). However
its a long way from the finish line, and they haven't started tests on the
Discovery yet.

1011.3 | What kind of military sense is that? | RUTILE::WILCOCKSON | pooped again | Fri Apr 06 1990 14:31 | 6 |
| I've never really understood the point in an army buying anything
other than the stuff made in the country its defending.
There can't be much to choose between the new Land Rovers and the
Mercs anyway. I wouldn't blame the German army for choosing Mercs,
but I think the British army ought to buy British, especially in
a case where the British product is on par with the foreign competition.

| I know that this is a rathole, but whilst we are on the subject, the
Australian Army has just purchased hundreds of LWB Isuzu diesel engined
LR's. The Mercedes' were considered, Toyota did not offer a vehicle.
They are reportedly considering a six-wheel drive version of the LR for
slightly heavier duties. But, the real heavy duty truck is the MB
Unimog. (I want one too!!!)
Regards, Ray.
