This note is a follow in from topic 416 which talked about Drive and survive and their Skid pan sessions. I have started a new topic so that this note can be more easily found from a Dir/title="skid pad" and to keep this information seperate from that in topic 416, whic may be a bit out of date now. Anyway, here's the facts: Drive and Survive, which Digital use for their 'Defensive driving' course, have a skidcar and can arrange lessons in it for 38 a head. I have approached the Sports and Social club for a subsidy on this, but they have decided not to support this venture at the moment. 38 comes from (400+VAT)/12 as I said 12 people were interested. I don't know if Digital could claim back the VAT on this or not. What D&S would do is split us into two groups of 6. The first group to arrive at 9am and finish at 12:30pm, the second group between 1pm and 4:30pm (bags I go in the second group !!). Lessons would take place at D&S's HQ at Boreham Airfield, Boreham, Chelmsford, Essex. (Telephone 0245 466749/468869) The skidcar (a Sierra by the looks of the photo I have) can hold three students at a time. While the other three students are waiting, they will be given 'manouevrability tests'. It is intended to complete exercises in the following: Understeer Oversteer High speed car control on poor surfaces Pulse braking Evasion methods Wet road \ Dry road } Braking & Skid control methods Ice road / Aquaplaning experience and control General briefing re car control The training takes place with the car in a special cradle arrangement, this allows training to take place at high speeds, unlike the more conventional slippery surface skid pans. I have this information in my cube (REO2-G/H9) too if you'd like a look. If you are interested, please reply to this basenote stating which days you would prefer/would not prefer and whether you would like the morning or afternoon sessions, or if you'll take either. If anyone is able to offer transport for six people, then this would be appreciated! When there enough people interested to organise a day that they're happy with, then I will contact D&S again and see about booking that day. Let's plan this to happen in the early March timeframe to give everyone plenty time to put it in their diaries and so there's plenty daylight for the afternoon session. Craig.

This isn't drive and survive, but...
While we were at Castle Coombe on Saturday getting Dereks racing gear,
we had a look at their skid pan, it'd only small, but looks good fun.
They use two Cortinas, and set the tyre pressures, such that one of them
demonstrates understeer, and the other oversteer. They charge 35 per
person for a half day session. (Or you can go as a group and book the
whole thing for approx 400) Is anyone interested? (Mark Saxby,(he says
to say hello) and Mandy are interested, so we need a few more to make it
worth booking the whole thing) I've asked them to send me the details, so
if anyone would like a copy or would be interrested in going - let me know!

They've also got a Honda Civic (no, honest!) so you can see what losing control in a FWD car is like. Plus some go-karts to race around in to test your new-found skid-control-skills. I've been thinking about going there for ages, should be fun and useful experience! (I've got a big article on the place at home somewhere; I'll bring it in if anyone wants more info) Scott | |||||
