We drive down to Marbella (40 miles short of Gibraltar) each
May/June except last year. Cruising around 85 MPH most of the way.
We catch the overnight Ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg (being P &
O shareholders) - will try Portsmouth Le Havre next (much more civilised
than Dover to anywhere), fill up with Diesel (up to 10p per gallon cheaper
than in Great Britain, mind you, that was when the exchange rate was
9.70 FF to the pound, it is now about 7.70!) at Auchan on the outskirts
of Cherbourg. then via Caen, Le Mans to Toulon where we pick up the
Autoroute to Bordeaux and on South to near Biarritz. We night stop at a
little 3 star Hotel just outside St Pee-sur Nivelle about 15 km inland
from Biarritz. This Hotel cost us (before the plummeted) 54 for
Bed, Breakfast(?) and A La Carte evening meal, each year.
Having paid the very expensive Motorway tolls in Spain, we now go
over the Pyrenees to Pamplona slow enough to enjoy the scenery and even
stop to take some photographs, where we pick up non toll dual
carraigeways via Burgos to Madrid (always a bit of a nightmare as there
isn't a proper ring road) down to Granada (well, miss it by "white
roads) and on to Malaga (where we were stuck in a gigantic jam for an
hour and a half!!!) arriving at Don Lola (between Feungirola and
Marbella) at around 9PM in time for Dinner. That was our route last
time (1991), but we tend to vary it for different scenery.
So how was the trip to Gib?
Malcolm.
