FINAL UPDATE
Well I imported my car a month or so back. When I went through Dover, I
asked how much tax I would pay if I subsequently sold the car (I was bringing
it in under change of residence tax-relief). The guy said about 750.
The rules have changed very recently, and I didn't have to pay VAT, as I
had already payed it in Germany (and had to prove it with the bill of sale,
specifying the VAT seperately).
So I got home and rang my local Customs and Excise branch and asked the
same question - 1750 they said. I pointed out that perhaps they were wrong
and mentioned the VAT payment. After 5 minutes he came back to the phone
and said 'sorry, you're right, the rules have changed. That will be 750
please'.
So, don't trust anyone - not even Customs and Excise officials !!!
I sold the car a day or so later. Incidentally, it cost new 11,400 (the
DM was quite weak at the time). I sold it for 10,500, to a dealer, when
it was 14 months old and with 25,000 miles on it. So I lost just about
1600.
