683.0. "IMP!ertinent notes" by DOOZER::PENNEY () Tue Jul 18 1989 15:04

Anyone into Hillman Imps?

All nostalgic tales of multitudinous replacements of water pumps &
driveshaft rubber couplings, punctured (yes, punctured) throttle linkages,
garage mechanics who wouldn't know a torque wrench from a tommy bar,
etc.etc., gratefully received. [Reference to torque wrench because engine
crankcase/block/head assembly 100% aluminium, quite unable to cope with
typical muscle-over-mind blacksmiths of the period.].

I had one years ago - the Husky (estate) version. Great little car, cost
#192.50 with 57000m on clock, reliable for further 30000m once a few of the
above typical problems sorted out. Wish I still had it. Always felt that
Imps were/are much nicer than Minis. Somehow more complete and refined.

This note is really prompted by my son's just having bought a '74 Imp as
his first car. Seems in fair nick mechanically, but some nasty corrosion
all round front wheelarch areas. Anyone know if things like major body
panels, esp. front wing, still available? [Anyone with experience of
fitting a new wing?] Also more mundane spares - things like nylon bushes
(the one for the gearchange linkage under the car), engine mounts etc.
Also, is there anywhere still specialising in/selling go-faster stuff for
Imps?

- Richard

683.16 Those were the days! SUBURB::POWELLMNostalgia isn't what it used to be!Wed Feb 03 1993 13:1641

    	Ah! Memories!

My first new car (with my own money, no company cars in those days!
Only for senior Managers) was a Hillman Imp in 1966. There
were no problems at all with it. Initially I used to travel the 180(?)
or so miles from Mildenhall in Suffolk where I lived, to English
Electric at Kidsgrove in Staffordshire on a Monday morning very early -
used to take about 3 hours if I remember rightly and no motorways -
then from there to Glasgow/Newcastle-upon-Tyne/London/Swansea/Liverpool as
required (working on Marine Data Loggers in those days) and return to
    home on Friday night.

Can't remember how many miles I did in it, but it was a lot! It
was ECF250D I think. I replaced it with a new Sunbeam Imp Sports which
was OEH777F, which went very well until I took it into the local to
Kidsgrove Garage for some repairs I don't remember what, and they did
unmentionable things to it with the result that it then performed as if
they had "filled the chassis with lead!"

Eventually I took it to Prices Garage in Southend (nearest to my
Mothers' home) and they found that the Engine had been grossly molested
to the extent that the camshaft chain wheel had been welded!!!! and
several other thing of similar magnitude! They had to plane the top of
the block because it was warped and then replace the block (they did
warn me first) and eventually I got the car back and it went very well
again. The Kidsgrove garage denied all responsibility of course.

I eventually bent the car beyond use when I turned right in a 40
limit and a VERY Fibre-glassed Mini-Van ran into the side of me at an
impact speed well in excess of the Speed Limit(!!!) and left very large
quantities of Fibreglass bit all over the road. That's my story and
I'm stuck/sticking with it! We were both "done" for it and I seem to
remember his Fine was bigger than mine. That was in about '69 and it
was still quite reliable. Over the years it did need new front Shock
Absorbers (oh yes, they were quite UNdrivable like that - try
    roundabouts with them shot!)

Didn't have another new car until my first company car in '72.
