631.0. "Volvo 480 opinions ?" by WOTVAX::HATTOS (I think, Therefore I'm paid less) Mon Jun 05 1989 18:16

    I've done a DIR/TIT=VOLVO but didn't find a related entry, so....

Has/Does anyone owned a VOLVo 480 ES or Turbo ?

Has anyone even driven one ?

If so what were your impressions as I am toying with the idea of
    getting one on lease.

Particular reference to Noise, Handling, Reliability, Power please...

    Thanks Stuart

My girlfriend is thinking of buying a second hand Volvo 480es.
I gather they aren't that quick (not in itself a bad thing), and seem
to be very expensive second hand. Anyone offer any other information
on the car? I would guess service and insurance costs are
considerable but I don't really know.

    	Thanks for any info,

    Cliff

Cliff, maybe your new to this conference. If you have a query on a
particular type of car its a good idea to do a "dir/tit" to see if
theres already a topic before starting a new one.

    should now be -.2

but by the time this note is entered, it will probably be -3. Don't you
just hate it when Notes go too fast?

I was just thinking. If Cliff (author of .4) does not use "next unseen"
and is checking his original note (1613) for replies he'll be in for a
shock cos his note won't be there.

I wonder if Mr mod kindly mailed him ?

Well you haven't had that much info yet.....

I drive a 440 GLT, which I believe is similar mechanically and probably
    performance wise.

    - Get one with power steering if you can, Volvos tend to be a little
      heavy at the wheel.

    - Performance is actually quite good, but not in the GTi category.
      (enough for me...).

    - Look out for rattles...

    - Ski rack : will cost you around Sfr 900.-- (330 !) because not only
is the original equipment rach expensive, but mountings need to be
fitted to the roof and will be 4.5 hours work. This issue is
      particular to the 480 only.

    - Parts are expensive for Volvos, and at least here in Switzerland the
garages charge through the nose - services cost about double what my
brother pays on his 16v Golf GTi.

About the same as a Golf in this country then....both "through the nose"

:-)

I had one of the very first 480s , very good , but buying very firsts
of anything means that the tech. gremlins havent been sorted out , to
    the full .

    A) On the speedo , being electronicly controled , after about 25,000mls
the needle started to go crazy , took it down the the garage and
they fixed it free of charge(warrenty) . It turns out that the
conection between the clocks and box has an N-LOCK type connector
on it and that the solder on it melted away .

    B) After the same distance , the clutch was badly warped , which was
       also done under warrentie .

However safe is what the car is . One day driving back from Devon ,
the weather was tipical British , wet , I was doing about 70mph , when
this car came from the left lane straight to the right(3 lanes) and
hitting me in the proccese . The out came was :-

VOLVO 480ES - Broken wing mirror
                  Dented door , mouldings missing
                  Dented in front wing .
(not alot but looked realy bad)

FORD SERRIA - Smashed in front end
                  Front wing missing
Dented door , broken window & mirror
Bent chassie & collapsed front strut .

Over all the car is built like a tank .

From one driver to another .

It's almost time to turn in my 480 turbo; after 1.5 year and approx.
    110.000 km.
It was really fun to drive this car (it has a lot of features that come
with the car - e.g. seat heating, boardcomputer etc.- whereas with
other makes you have to pay for these).
No SINGLE problem during the time I drove the car. It is swift and save
and it is at least not a car you see by dozens when you'rec driving.
