451.0. "Golf fuel computer" by WARDER::MEAKINS (Clive Meakins) Tue Jan 17 1989 13:41

Does anyone out there know how the VW Golf fuel computer works?

I've heard that it doesn't use a fuel flow meter, but electrical
connections to the coil, speedo and other places. The first two
tank fulls of fuel in my 16V Golf gave a real 33 mpg, the
computer indicates 29 mpg. Is the computer normally more / less
    accurate?

I've not done a long run yet, most trips being around 30 miles.
Should be doing a long trip this week, I'll see if that makes a
    difference.

    Clive.

My Golf 16v computer always calculates (misscalculates?) the mpg by
    by 3. ie computer = 29 mpg
    	  manually    = 33 mpg

    - probably best to only use it for what it's accurate at...telling the
      time!

I hate having a clock in the middle of my instrument panel!

I always switch the thing to the oil temp. It's great, the --- is a
constant reminder that the oil is not too warm (under 50 deg C), and so I
     avoid pushing the car hard.

Oh and the outside temprature is ok for when you are sitting in the car
park, having started up. You can see roughly whether you should have
fitted those replacement heated washer jets or not!

    re - calculating manually

Odometers usually overread (so you have done slightly less distance
than you it says). So, manually calculating your mpg will usually show
you are doing more miles per gallon than you actually are. The computer
    may be more accuate.

My odometer and fuel computer read the same milage...so I conclude that
the mpg readout on the computer is inaccurate.
