    A problem.

I'm only 19yrs and I need a decent size car to take on my holiday
in August. The problem is that i'm 2 yrs below the age at which most
hire companies allow hire(21 yrs min).I've tried loads of companies, but
drawn a blank. One company said they'd give me a car if my insurance
company would give me cover, but for 7 days in a 1.4i Astra they want
150quid,so I told them to get on their bike.

    		Any suggestions

| | Hertz used to rent to under 21s. Don't forget that Digital has an
agreement with Avis -- available for personal as well as business rental.
You might find that the Digital agreement covers under 21s.

No they didn't. I tried all well known hire companies a few years back
to try and get a hire car and none of them were interested (clean
    license, reference from Digital).

| | According to VTX travel under the Car Rental Introduction heading, "The
age requirement for employees who rent vehicles from Avis is eighteen
    (18) years of age. If your a DEC employee you should be able to get a
rental for business or personal use.
Try again, this time be a little more forcefull/also check with your
local AVIS/DEC rep, they may be able to help out.
    good luck

| | Remember that personal use under the AVIS/DEC agreement does not included any
kind of insurance (over here anyway). Check it carefully. And get written
confirmation that it is OK.
I booked a hire car (group A) through AVIS/DEC and turned up at Aberdeen airport
expecting a little fiesta, they only had a sierra xr4i left so naturally i said
i'd take that... "how old are you sir?"... "err 19"... "i'm sorry but we can't
hire out to you blah blah blah"... left me in Aberdeen on a Saturday afternoon
(everythings closed!!!!) with no transport... a very sticky situation! ;-)

Perhaps an International Driving Permit?
Do they include space for endorsements?

The AA know how to get these permits, I think you need a photo as well as your
normal license.
It is a old dodge to get one of these in advance so that you can drive abroad
even if you get banned at home!
I remember that one of these was advisable in Europe before all this license
harmonisation rubbish, however I think they are still advisable for USA.

_Richard
BTW:
When you license is clean, perhaps it could get destroyed? in the washing
machine, and then you could get a clean duplicate!!!

| | RE 14 --

Once your DR10 (or any other suspension) has officially become history
(10 years for DR, 3 years for others I think) PLUS ONE YEAR, you can
apply to Swansea for a clean duplicate. They make a nominal charge.

RE International Drivers' Permits - the AA not only "know how to get
these", they can issue them, on the spot. Turn up to an AA office (e.g.
in Reading at the Broad Street Mall) with a passport photo, your normal
license and a fee (I forget how much) and there you are. I'd phone them
    first to check.

    RE earlier reply --

I *think* that personal use of an AVIS car on the DEC-deal in the U.S.
includes Collision Damage Waiver (just as well, as it's normally quite
an expensive add-on, and is VITAL in the U.S because without it you're
liable up to the full value of the car. This is except in a couple of
states where they've made this illegal).

This was definitely the case in August last year, when I rented an AVIS
car from Boston-Logan for a couple of weeks' personal use on the
DEC-deal. Much cheaper than any other supplier too. But I would check
to make sure the deal on CDW hasn't changed.
