416.0. "THE IDEAL CHRISTMAS PRESENT(WELL NEARLY)" by DOOZER::VTX () Mon Dec 12 1988 12:05

    "DRIVE & SURVIVE"

    A NOTE FROM OUR SPONSORS!

"The company who is currently training Digital drivers with 'on the
road' training is now offering skid control courses. This course
is 1/2 day and provides training in a variety of skids and includes
manoeuvering and parking skills and an exercise in balance with
a 'ball in teh bowl' competition.

The training will cost 40 pounds per head. The location is likely
    to be just outside Oxford.

This is a fun course but is also educational and instructive. Learn
who to control a car NOW before you get caught out. Encourage the
other half to come along and have a good time.

    ITS FUN, EXCITING AND SAFE."

    If you are interested

Phone (0603) 760018 for further details.

Now that I know how to get into notes I will endevour to use it
to keep you updated with the Skilful Driving programme.

    Have a good Christmas.

    Regards

    Michelle

Here is my mail message to Linda Lack....

Hi there Linda,
I was on the 'drive and survive' course recently, which Digital
recommends lease car owners go on regularly. Drive and Survive also
do a number of other courses, and one of these is skid pan training.
I would be interested in going on a skid pan training session, and I
have managed to get a list of enough people (12+) interested to organise
a day out with Drive and Survive for a skid pan session. D+S charge
around 40 a head for this day out - I was wondering whether the
sports and social club could help me in the following:

1) Would it be possible to obtain funding through the sports and
social club to subsidise the day out?

2) Could the sports and social club help me to arrange transport
to the skid pan venue? I would probably need a minibus for the
day, the session would probably be held 80 miles away in Chelmsford.

The benefits to Digital for this day out are relatively easy to show:-
Digital already recognises the benefit of regularly sending employees
on the drive and survive basic course - fewer accidents to employees
result in fewer days off, lower hospital bills and less deaths.
Having a good knowledge of how to control a skid is the next stage
in a safer driving programme. Especially with the bad weather coming
up soon, I believe such an outing would 'repay' itself in a very short
time.

please mail me on marvin::cockburn or Craig Cockburn @reo or phone me
on 830-4510 if you want to talk this over.

cheers,
	Craig

I HAVE REPLIED ACTUALLY, BUT MAYBE THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH SYSTEMS.

THE COMMITTEE DECIDED THAT AT THIS TIME THEY FELT UNABLE TO SUPPORT YOUR
PROJECT. MAYBE LATER IN THE YEAR THEY MAY LOOK AT IT AGAIN.

Well, perhaps no surprise there, considering the relatively minor
interest, but I still want to go !!

Dammit, let's just do it anyway. When can we organise our (late)
    Christmas treat ?

re .38:

Ian, your in the Crescent S&SC, they might well fund a Crescent event.

I'll write off to Drive and Survive in the next few days and get them to
send me more details etc.

Meanwhile, if others could see if S&SC groups outside Reading could fund
this, it would be appreciated. Perhaps if another group funds it then it
may encourage Reading to do the same...

re .40:

Reading S&SC is run by the company, all other S&SC are run by employees who
are elected representatives.

Draw your own conclusions on how the two make decisions on funding events.

416.42Who drives it?FIELD::LOUGHLINIFri Jan 12 1990 14:096
Does anyone know who administrates the Drive and Survive course
nowadays? I've been trying to get booked on it since I returned
    from France.

you aren't the only one.....

apparently (I was told) only qualified drivers are being sent on it at the
moment. The intention is to work down through them and then start on those of
us who are not qualified.

I have this theory though, that the unqualified drivers will never get a look in
because they will never get through those qualified (as new people arrive and
go to the top of the list !).

My Email containing my joining instructions came from Claire-Louise
Worman, who is a Senior Administration Specialist at RKA; you might
try calling her. However, my understanding is that they are going
to clear the qualified drivers first - I have been waiting for three
and a half years, and I do have a company car.

I am a "qualified" driver, and I've been around Digital for 9-10
months. I still haven't been on the course. The message is be patient,
they move around the country to different locations, and I just missed
one in Warrington. Hang on and you'll get there (unless you prang the
    mobile first, of course :-)

 Re .43

I do not have a Digital company car, and I managed to get on the
course no problem. In fact, there were two of us on the course that
day and the other attendee didn't have a Digital car either. As no
pool car was available, we had to do the course in our own cars
	instead.
