388.0. "Golf or Astra ???" by EGAV01::FMORLEY () Wed Nov 16 1988 21:57

I am currently considering changing my 1986 Opel Corsa 1.0
(Vauxhall Nova) - 38,000 miles, utterly reliable! I have more or
less narrowed its successor to either a Volkswagen Golf 1.3C or
an Opel Kadett 1.3S LS (Astra 1.3 Merit). The merits of both cars
as I see it are as follows:

Kadett: Free revving 75bhp ohc engine
            Nicer shape
            Better Equipment
            Standard 5-speed box
            Livlier!

    Golf: Build quality/solidity
          Resale value
          Space
          Slight handling advantage

The difference in trade-in value against either is negligable.
I have a slight preference for the Kadett - but could be swayed
    in favour of the Golf.

    I'd appreciate opinions please!

    Frank.

PS. Irish prices may interest you!

             Volkswagen Golf 1.3C 5dr: 10,350
             Opel kadett 1.3S LS 5dr: 10,475

             CRAZY!!!

My friend is changing his car.He was thinking of getting a golf GTI 16V
but the insurance stung him abit.So do any of you have an opinion on
which of the either of these cars he should get.

    Pug 205 1.6 GTI,
    Astra SRI 1.8.
    Rover 216 GTI.

He's thinking of spending about 8K.The car has to be reliable, cheapish
to run,and have a bit of poke. He's also 6ft 4,so it needs to have a
    decent bit of leg room.

    	Thanks in advance.

388.7Don't discount Golf GTi 8VFUTURS::FIDOThe Man With No Personal NameFri Sep 18 1992 13:085
The insurance on a Golf GTi 8V won't be so bad and its performance
    isn't much worse
