I hope that the Onion (sorry, Orion) has improved a very great deal
since I had my 1.6i Ghia:
It was delivered with a bent n/s rear axle, such that the Brake Drum
rubbed on the Brake Shoes (!); would you believe that Zenith in
Reading at that time replaced the Drum and Brake Shoes on the second
visit to them for the problem (at 3500 miles) having said that they
couldn't find any problem the first visit at 1200 miles!
The front disks and pads were replaced SEVEN times in 2 years/ 55,000
miles for wheel wobble when braking - 4 times under warranty!
The radiator had to be replaced
The battery had to be replaced
The front wiring looms had to be replaced FOUR times for failing to
report brake pad wear
The alternator had to be replaced
The car had to be towed away twice for non starting problems in cold
weather
The car was unstable in a cross wind
Terrible!!!!
The car was "A" reg so memory is fading a bit now, but it had a proud
"Made in Germany" sticker on the windscreen, so I left it on there! I
vowed never to have another Ford in my life!!!!!!!! Does anyone in
their right mind have one now?
Malcolm.

| Call me silly if you want but a few people have told me that the old
style Orion 1.6i Ghia was a very nice car. Also they said it was a bit
nippy too !!

Barry,
Funny you say that. I've heard a number of people say how much better
the 1.6i Orion was than the XR3i. Maybe there's something in it?

| I had a 1986 ('C' plate) Orion 1.6i:
. It went like a rocket (definitely *felt* faster than an XR3i)
. It didn't like cornering hard (esp. in the wet)
. It never broke down on me
. It always started on cold mornings
The only things I disliked were:
o Boot access was awkward and limiting (I now prefer hatchbacks)
o The performance went down 3,000 miles after a service
All in all, not bad. But I've never had another Ford (and don't want
one).

the next model

| Looks like we are agreed then Mark and Tony........
A week to go till I leave and I've just started agreeing with
people...oh well better late then never.
BTW - I know this is in the wrong topic but this week I've been driving
a Fiat Panda 750. Its brilliant....like driving a bumper car. The
biggest surprise for me was that it will do 90, cruise quite happily,
feels quite nippy and all with a 750cc/50+mpg/unleaded engine !!
For a runaround what an excellant car.........should be good going back
to my spitty though !!

265.31 | My onion... | HOTSPR::KENNEDY | ALPHA - it's only noughts and ones! | Mon Sep 21 1992 19:19 | 9 |
| I've had one (my own, not the companys) for two years, it is an H reg
1.6i Ghia.
Once the erractic idle problem was fixed (quickly and effectively by
Jacksons) the car has been 100% reliable. It seems quicker, and
quieter than a XR3i, the finish is good, nothing has fallen off, no
rattles have developed - I've no complaints at all.

| Orions are quicker than Xr3i's..!!
I have an Xr3i for my sins, and my girlfriend has had a couple of
Onions, both quicker and more responsive than the escort, although the
handling is certainly not in the "hot hatch" class..!!
