234.0. "MGB - a classic, or just an allegro in disguise?" by VESUVE::WHEELWRIGHT (Walking hatstand for rent) Fri Jul 15 1988 14:02

I, for my sins drive a "rather" battered MGB which I have owned for
many years now, having bought it in its heyday of youth and
performance. What I find completely incomprehensible is why these cars
are being increasingly to be considered classics. Please don't
misunderstand me, I enjoy the old 'B' and she's done trusty service, but
    she is:

Slow - even in '63 (or was it 62) 0-60 in 11.9 wasn't quick for
               an 1800cc 2 seater

Heavy - bumpstarting - a thing all MG drivers become intimately
                cognisant of, is a nightmare

Unreliable - although mine has always expired on the drive,
genuine replacement parts seem to self-destruct with
frightening regularity (don't talk to me about
                shock-absorbers)

and the Handling - a contemporary ford popular wasn't much worse....

I agree she's quite pretty - perhaps thats why so many were originally
bought by women (especially with servo brakes - the cars not the women)
and many are convertable...but is this sufficient reason to make it, as
    it increasingly becomes, a classic?

Compare the current prices with those of a TR3A which is a REAL
classic, the TR costs only a little more and is a tremendous car

What's you opinion on the old Ladykiller, should she be a classic?

    Jonathan

PS if anyone wants a TR3 steel hardtop, tonneau or side-screens, call me!

I have come to an unpleasant surprise: The MGB GT, which I wanted to
purchase appeared to have a replacement engine, carbs, gears, od,
doors etc. from cars of other MK series.
This one was built between 1971-1972, but had engine etc. of rubber
bumper type, doors of 1974 and interior was not at original year
    as well.

What percentage of the cars value is lost with such material used
    instead of correct parts?

>> What percentage of the cars value is lost with such material used
>> instead of correct parts?

I've recently restored (a euphamism for fixing the rust) a 1977
MGB GT and its been my experience that its not always possible
	to get the correct parts.

For example, I needed a complete set of seat covers. Now the
original colour for my car is that orangey-yellow thing. But
they don't make them like that any more so I had to settle for
the gey (which I actually prefer!)

Also, I needed one single seat-belt, but you can't get an
inertia-reel seat-belt for love nor money at the moment. Its
something to do with waiting for an EEC stamp of approval I
believe. So I've had to fit the fixed type.

A friend of mine who owns several MGs told me that the
seat-colour change would knock about 100 quid off the worth
of a fully restored car, but that the seat-belt would have
	little effect.

I also made one screw-up. When I re-sprayed the engine bay,
I lacquered the engine red (well its a nice colour isn't it!)
Apparently the correct colour should have been black. Thats
reckoned to have knocked 400 notes off the price!

Alan, have you made any estimates concerning my problem with BIG
differences? (Engine, carbs, ignition, radiator, seats, sealing)

I have canceled my offer. The car was priced DFL 13500 and I was
able to negotiate to DFL 10000. Partialy restored with new sills,
doors, wings, rubber bumperengine/carbs, wrong interior etc.
gave me no confidence for a valid investment though.

Sorry, I can't really help you there. I'm not an MG expert.
I would pass your question on to Sue (her in the know!) but
she works for the MOD and is away at sea at the moment. I
believe she'll be back in this county in about a months time.
I could ask her then of your still interested???

The MGB is not really a good car to have as investment anyway.
There are too many of them around, the cost of a car plus a good
restoration results in a car with a value of just about the total
    of these two.

Having said that, it is a nice car to drive round in on summer days,
unless it is a GT !!!

    Alan,

Yes, please ask Sue. If I'll invest, I'd rather have it done right!
    Please explain MOD.

    Happy Easter.

Where did you get the fixed seat belts from?

I had exactly the opposite problem when restoring my MGB and could
only get inertia belts. These snag all the time and you need to be
double jointed to reach them but if you want to swap...

The B as the midget can have "big" improvements for little cost. My
1500cc Midget with a cost of three hundred pounds now handles like a
dream and performs very well. Bert(girlfriends nickname) has 97 bhp
and spax adjustable shocks, making the handling superb ! The engine has
just K-N filters, a good exhaust system (Peco), oil cooler and the
usual attention and time. Hopefully I will have time this summer to
sort the body work out as well.

    Cheers
