    I need to hire a car at Heathrow from Friday 9.30 pm - Monday 5pm
    for personal use.

    Does anybody know where/how I might get a better deal ?

    Don't talk to me about hiring cars, my car is in the garage today and
    I couldn't quite manage to persuade any hire company to hire me even
    their smallest car because I'm only 20.  Miserable old sods!!

    Matt, when we were coming over for the course, we had to wait an hour
    at the Avis desk whilst they pondered whether or not to give us a car.
    In the end our office sorted it with them so that I was actually
    driving under Digital insurance.

    	Nothing unusual there, that is how *all* Digital hire agreements
    	are arranged. Your 'office' should have booked it that way in the
    	first plaace.

Try "Century" (sorry no number, but they should be in the phone
book).

We used them in Frankfurt and they were cheap. We hired a Cavalier
at about �20 per day. They are a British firm and I know they have a 
branch near Heathrow. The reason they are cheap is they don't have a 
site the airport, but they will collect you.

    What I am about to note here may have been fact from way back when, but
    it was news to me recently, so it may be to some of you as well.
    
    I went to AVIS to hire a car for two days on the Digital rate. This
    happened to be on a Friday and what this meant was... that I could have
    a car for three days on the special AVIS weekend rate (all insurance
    included) for 11 spondoolies less than two day hire on the Digital rate
    (with only cdw included); I needed the insurance 'cos I was not on
    company business.
    
    A slight addendum to this: I was collecting the car from AVIS in
    Fareham; the booking was made with the statement "I need a car for two
    days at the most". At AVIS' discretion the receptionist then calculated
    that the AVIS weekend rate would actually save me money; further if I
    had returned the car after only one day's use AVIS would charge me the
    single day's Digital rate... thereby saving me money once again.

    The UK Digital deal with Avis now includes only 100 free miles per day.
    After that it's 20 pence per mile extra (plus VAT). Beware of this if
    you are planning long journeys.
    
    This seems to apply for extended periods also, eg 1 week = 700 free
    miles.

    Yes, I crunched into this the other week, I was quoted 22p per extra
    mile.   There wsn't any company wide announcement about this, and I now
    hire cars as a private individual when i need them, which saves Dec 
    a lot of money, although I'm unsure how I stand if I damage the car at
    all.

    I am looking for an automatic car to hire for 2 weeks this summer
    (June). I would like to pick it up at (or near) and bring it back to 
    (or near) Gatwick. 
    Does anyone know the name (and phone/fax) of a "cheap" car hire 
    that I could contact ?

My parents used them last time they visited - I know they will take the
car to Heathrow, but don't know about Gatwick, and don't know if they
do automatics.
