185.0. "Car break-in deterrants ?" by FORTY2::RANDALL (The man with the Triumph Toledo) Mon Jun 06 1988 19:07

Hi there,

After reading all the notes on car alarms and their effectiveness/
defectiveness, what is needed is a good deterant. For a start, if you put
warning stickers on the windows then any potential theif would surely think
twice.

I have also come up with another deterant that would surely put off all but
the most stupid thief. If any of you out there go fishing (particulary at
night) then you may have heard of something called a "Betalite". This is a
chemical light with a greenish glow in a thin tube about one inch long. When
you buy it you simply bend it, shake it and it glows green for upto 20 years.

Now I am just about to fit one of these in my car behind the word "ALARM" which
is in reverse video (ie: it lights up the word "ALARM"). I painted the outline
of the word "ALARM" on a piece of transparent plastic and then when I got it
right painted the rest of the plastic black. Once mounted in a box it will
look like you have an alarm on 24 hours a day and every day. It won't be
drawing current from your battery and will last longer (in most cases) than
the car. The "Betalite"'s come in three strenghts; 100, 300 and 500 costing
from between 1.65 to 5.95. If there is interest I will post the name and
address of the supplier in a future note.

Because a potential thief can actually see this so called 'alarm indicator'
in your car the chances are he won't touch it ?.

What do you think ??. Any other deterant ideas out there ?.

Regards

185.25Alarm saves stereo, but only 'cos I heard itFUTURS::FIDOpersonal name intentionally left blankTue Nov 24 1992 09:3018
Well, my car alarm saved my stereo last night. I was parked in a car
park in Gloucester while I was in a house across the road. After being
inside for about an hour and a half, I heard the alarm go off.

I went outside to see two teenagers ( about 16 ) trying to lever the
stereo out. I shouted and chased them off. They had smashed the rear
quarter light and then opened the doors.

What amazed me most was that the kids weren't detered at all by the
alarm going off - it was only when I came after them that they decided
it was time to go. No one else came out to see what the noise was all
about. Someone else came over to me afterwards and said that they had
seen them round the car when the alarm went off, but thtought that they
were just trying to get in !

Still, all I need to do now is replace the rear quarterlight !
