Note 1127.0 Lease Car Renewal: Months *and/or* Miles?? 2 replies
YUPPY::FOX "Monotony on the Bounty" 11 lines 29-JUN-1990 13:58

I notice on VTX that the Car Fleet section has recently been updated
to provide more information relating to the scheme, but there are
no specifics relating to duration.
The standard lease contract is "30 months/50,000 miles". Does this
mean that you can have a new lease car after 30 months *OR* 50,000
miles? Presumably it does.
If this is the case, I've only got 2,000 miles to go instead of
12 months.

Note 1128.0 Misquote or price increase? No replies
PIPKIN::MALTBY "Mike Maltby 0734 853952 {830 3952}" 15 lines 2-JUL-1990 22:36
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've come up with a method of working out the lease cost of Vauxhall
Carltons, based upon the price of the car plus add-ons, and I can get
to within 50p. It works for all the quotes up on VTX at present, with
one exception, and that's the one I had back last Thursday, which is
over 200 pounds too high. Now I know that both lease companies have
probably made the same mistake, and that the requote I've asked for
will come in at the right price, but I find it a interesting that 2
days before the car supplements go up by between 100 and 350 pounds, I
get an error like this.
Has anybody else been watching car prices closely, and if so, have any
other prices taken a hike in the last few days? Does anybody know if
the lease companies put up their prices at this time of year?

Simon,
I can't see any pattern in the Daihutsu quotes, and I don't have a
price list for them. I've noticed before, that if the resale value at
the end of lease is unknown, then the quotes become erratic. In the
case of Carltons, you get a straight line graph if you plot price vs
lease cost.

170.84 | Leasing second hand models ?
| DAL::LOGAN | DECkchair Attendant | Mon Aug 20 1990 14:00 | 6 |
| Is it possible to lease a second hand car, or failing that an older
model of a new car (one that hadn't been registered) ? e.g. Would it be possible
to lease an old model MR2 (1600cc) ?
Yours in a state of ignorance,
Andy.

170.85 | New cars only | VOGON::BALL | Have you got a licence for that pun? | Mon Aug 20 1990 20:30 | 15 |
| Re prev by Andy
I'm pretty sure the lease has to be for a new vehicle. The quote system
wouldn't really work for second hand cars because no two second hand cars would
be in exactly the same condition.
As for old models, I suppose there would be nothing to stop you trying but
probably PHH and Hertz wouldn't be able to find them so would refuse to quote.
In short, you specify a car which they then find. If you happen to know there's
an unregistered old MR2 at Bloggs Garage there's no obvious way of telling the
lease companies about it.

170.87 | it can be done!! | SEDOAS::SHAW | | Wed Aug 22 1990 13:22 | 11 |
| Hi,
You may not be able to lease second hand cars through DEC but
that doesn't mean it can't be done. My dad leases a second hand
jag through PHH. It arrived one month old with 1,000 miles on the
clock and was quite a bit cheaper than a "new" one.
Cheers,
Tim

I doubt it, it should be slightly more. The VAT figure of 17% is
levied on the base price, PLUS, the 10% car tax. Thus, the VAT element
should drop a little too.

As the VAT is levied on the base price and its rate has not changed the VAT
element will not change at all.
The old price is Base Price + 17.5% VAT + 10% Car Tax = 1.275 * Base Price
The new price is Base Price + 17.5% VAT + 5% Car Tax = 1.225 * Base Price
A car that sold for 10,000 will now sell for 9608 - a 3.92% reduction.

| Actually, Jeremy, I believe that you'll find VAT is added AFTER the Car
Purchase Tax has been added, i.e.
(Base Price + 5%) * 1.175, as witnessed on TV last night !!
This has long been criticised as a way of taxing car purchase twice !!

What was that about some VAT limit being raised from 8K to 12K? I
thought that was about companies claiming back the VAT on new cars.
|
170.98 | | COMICS::WEGG | Some hard boiled eggs & some nuts. | Wed Mar 11 1992 22:09 | 8 |
| The increase from 8K to 12K is the value of the car for which a
'capital allowance' can be made - whatever that means.
Taxi and car hire firms, and driving schools, and now going to be able
to reclaim the VAT on cars - impling that all other businesses (still)
can't.

There is a special secondhand car VAT scheme and I guess a ``new''

dealer. But I don't know any details...

| I think it's to ensure Vauxhall can recover the cost of repairing any
damage or replacing any fuel used. The cars arrive with a full tank of
fuel less the amount used for delivery. When returned the cars are
expected to have a full tank also.

a few weeks notice is needed.
A free tank of fuel is usually provided too :-)
