136.5 | Precise advertising timing | WELSWS::SMITHM | The main RISC to life is U*ix! | Mon Oct 08 1990 12:11 | 5 |
| Did anyone notice the 405 advert during TOP GUN last saturday evening?
There was a striking similarity(!) between the song in the advert and
one of the songs in the film - Take My Breath Away (or some such title).

| Re: .5
There's no wonder there was a similarity, as the song in the ad and the one
in the film (Take my Breath Away) are one and the same. It was listed in
the credits at the end of the film.
It was rather uncanny how the ad was the first in the slot and so just
seemed to carry on the music that had been on the film a few seconds earlier.

| Several of the ads during Top Gun were clearly derived from/ aimed at the film.
(My favourite - the guy flame-grilling his hamburger up the tail-pipe of
a plane on the catapult!)
I'd guess that the companies involved spent a great deal of extra maoney to make
sure their commercials went out at the right moment !

| This is interesting. I thought exactly to same thing. There appear
to be many adverts based on the theme of a film, but this is the
first time i've noticed this cleverly interwoven into the ads during
the film.
I wonder if ITV approach these companies to tell them the film is
being shown and charge them over the top to advertise then, or the
other way 'round, where the people making the ad approach itv to
get the slot they require. I suspect its the latter.

| Re - a few.
The selling of TV advertising time is a very complicated business -
there was a whole documentary about it last year. The advertising
agencies are shrewed enough to know exactly the right spots to
place particular ads, and popular slots are auctioned.
I enjoyed the revival of the very old PG Tips advert ... "Can you
ride tandem?"... during the Tour de France coverage.
Maybe this discussion should be in UK_TV.

136.13 | 405 vs 605 headroom | BOUTYE::MULLAN | Its ony Rock"n"Roll but I like it | Tue Oct 09 1990 10:25 | 7 |
| I checked out the '90 models when I left my '88 one in for
service last week - not much noticable difference.
Saw the 605 yesterday. It seems to have the same headroom problem
as the 405 which is surprising for a car of its size.

136.15 | Ad slots during prime shows are "Autctioned" | 45235::KORMAN | tgif!! | Tue Oct 09 1990 16:59 | 14 |

The ITV companies virtually auction these prime time slots - there is a large
Honeywell DPS multi-processor system surrounded by VAXen at a company in
Thames Ditton, Surrey, that handles all this - the ad agencies link in via
viewdata and X.25/Dial-Up connections to enter bids for each slot. For very
good slots - eg during a Cup Final etc, the final ad running order may not be
fixed until literally seconds before the ad break. The info is then transmitted
to the TV company's systems that control the ad tranmissions - it's quite an
operation.
I set up the VAX and some of the comms software in my previous job - it is
quite interesting stuff!

....in my local dealer at the w'end, looking at the 405 GTDT, and the only
differences he could think of between 90 and 91 (or 89 and 90 if you prefer!)
were the wing on the back and one-shot window on the drivers door.
Surely they've done more than that ? Or is it that good already ?

Ummm.....well, you see, it's like this:
I ordered the 405 GTDT, it comes next month, and all is sunlight and roses,
except..... where do I put the bike ?
Backing up a frame or two...... I will need to carry a bike at some point....
any 405 drivers know if standard roof-racks will go on ? It looks awfully
smooth and aerodynamic in the pictures.....no gutters or little hooky-bits.
(Yes, I know I said I could do it Steve...just sort of double-checking, right?)

| You get an expensive gutterless roof rack!. It has feet to sit on the
roof, and brackets that fit into the door aperture to hold it.
Or you can get a bracket type thingy to fit a tow hook if you had one.

136.20 | Or ... | MANWRK::SMITHM | Ex-FYO, WLO and soon to be Ex-DEC. | Thu Nov 08 1990 16:18 | 11 |
| ... there is the type that has two square-tubular bars (the brand
name escapes me just now, but the packaging is blue and yellow).
Onto these bars, one buys `attachable accessories' in order to
carry the likes of skis, bicycles and probably the kitchen sink!
It ends up quite expensive; though once you've got it ...
As Richard stated, there's also a "V" shaped device for carrying
cycles which fits onto the ball of a tow-bar - in you have one.
I noticed this type last year in France - cost about 33.00.

| For the sake of completeness....
I'll answer my own question, in case anybody else wants to know....
The rack that I already have is an Automaxi, that's the series that comes
with all the adaptors for bikes and kitchen sinks and the like.
My concern was how it fitted on a car that didn't have any visible bits for
it to attach to. When I checked with the shop I bought it from, the guy
smiled a lot and sold me that adaptor, too! They do a whole series of kits,
with which you replace the existing feet on the rack, each kit for a
different sort of car.... and the kits include the bit of paper that
tells you the secret!
On the 405, you peel back the rubber seal at the top of the door aperture,
and you find there's a little blanking-plug there. Take it out, and you
reveal a tapped socket, into which the rack adator screws. Clever, no ?
The 405 came today, and I looked, and there they were... little sneaky
holes in the roof!
