40.0. "Car prices in UK" by MARVIN::COCKBURN (Too much blood in my alcoholstream) Sun Jan 17 1988 20:39

Having recently moved from Edinburgh :-) to Reading :-(, I've noticed
a difference in 2nd hand car prices - or is it my imagination?

An 'average' ex-lease car, say a 1.6 cavalier, which has been
thrashed to death on the lease scheme for 2 years and which
has probably done 20,000 plus miles/year will fetch in the
region of 3,500 to 4,000. Isn't this a bit much to expect
to pay for a car, albeit only 30 months old, which has done
50,000+ miles? My car (non lease) has done 60K easy miles and
even it's giving problems + we all know how well treated the
 company cars are!

For example, in Scotland my father recently bought a three
year old cavalier 1.6 for 3.5K and it had only done 12,000
miles. This is by no means an exceptional bargain. My brother
also bought a car (ok, so it was an s-reg mini) for TEN POUNDS
AND it's got an MOT, and it does 60MPH.

Do the lease company put a profit margin on the cars they
sell or are cars just more expensive in the south ?

Heard a snippet on the radio this morning which mentioned some form of
'recommendation' currently being proposed that would result in the
prices of new cars being reduced by up to a third...

Just our luck, they'll probably put the prices up in the other countries

The report suggested that if dealers were allowed the choice of more
than one "Make" and varied methods of retailing , cars could be
    cheaper.

Not wishing to start a rat hole but as its about car prices here goes

In Autocar and Motor they announced that the golf VR6 will be 19,085
pounds which is as much as a Cosworth they said, but a Cosworth 28,000
or so I thought, But they go on to say that the new list price for the
cossie is 21,380 so by the time you haggle for your 10% discount and
pay delivery the cossie becomes 19,582.
On the other hand Ford are asking 15,000 for the XR3i!!!

If you get the Reading Chronicle and Newbury Weekly news, they have
loads of adverts from different garages with "deals"

One is due out Thursday (today), and one Friday - which can sometimes
be available from large newsagents on Thursday evening.
