-< RS2000 anyone? >-
Hi there Euro_Motorists!
I have owned Ford Escort RS2000's for the last 5 years, and am
completely besotted by the marque.
I was wondering if any noters out there own one, or are interested
in them, or have even heard of them?
Note that this is NOT the RS Turbo, but the MK1 or 2 RS2000 with
2 litre OHC engine.
Any input?

-< you bet! >-
I love the 'real' escort especially the RS mk1 followed by the RS
mk2
I despise the current escorts, including the RS's, Tur(gid)bo and
the unispiring ex-R3 with or without the "i"
I have never owned an RS, but my dad had a 1600 mexico way back
and that was pretty good, and Wivine owned a 1300 sport as well,
but she will probably tell you more about it.
My dream at one stage was a new mk2 RS 2000 (the mk1 was no longer
made) with a roll cage, all the lights, seats etc., 'cause I did
then live in Wales, and the rally courses available there are out
of this world.
Andy 8*)-<--<
PS: I learned to drive in an escort 1600 (mexico I think) and I
was taught to drive by an ex-rally driver - I could change gear
without the clutch and do a handbrake turn, but could I reverse
around a corner, I had to go to a driving school to learn how to
do that!

Nice story Andy,
I agree with you about the Turbo..it's 0-60 speed is about the same
as the Xr2..
Since I am in the owners club, I get to hear about the "real" side
of owning these cars..esp the Turbo which is suffering from a bad
exhaust cracking problem..(tee hee).
I have a soft spot for the 'ole Rs's..mine is a 1980 custom, which
I'm gonna take off the road soon..(this weekend) to do a restoration
job on..(I have a Fiat Panda lease car to drive to & from work now!!!)
Although I have never done a handbrake turn on the public highway,
I do specialise in power-sliding out of roundabouts!
Yeah!...sideways motoring rules OK?

RWD will always "feel" nicer, and I think (personnaly) that the
handling is superior in the dry...(in the wet however, FWD does
have the advantage)

Anyone remember the RS3100 or the RS1600 complete with BDA engine.
Then of course the droopsnoot Firenza and the HS2300 Chevette. We
could go further back to the Turbo Manta ( marketed by Vauxhall/
Opel, but developed by Broadspeed if I remember ) and the BMW 2002
tii and Turbo.
Then of course we could start on the exotica, such as the Iso Griffo
7 litre ( pass one everyday into work. Should/Could I buy it? )
and the very rare Aston Martin BDA < not mispelt, and I have proof
in England somewhere to prove it. It was an uprated version prior
to the Vantage.
Coming back to reality, and a bit more up to date, the BMW 745i
Turbo, Bently Mulsanne Turbo R, BMW M635 CSi, M535, M3, Audi Quattro
etc. etc.
In fact, is there any manufacturer who does'nt do a special?
Anyone remember a little number called Cooper?
A little story.
Driving from Cannock to Stafford on a lovely road, coming towards
me round a corner was a Range Rover. He was really tanking on, with
a look of sheer terror on his face. Next corner, a RS2000, tail
out, HUGE broad grin on his face.
Is a Range Rover more difficult to drive?
Food for discussion!

-< Real ESCORTS! >-
re : .1
Yes the Escort 1300 Sport was a real beauty in everything.
They only made it in two colours, red and yellow. If I remember
well, the body was made in Germany and the rest including assembling
the car was done in Britain. The indicator switch was on the right
hand side of the steering wheel as well as the choke knob, while
the ignition was at the left hand side.
You could drive it very economically, like using 9 liters to 100
kilometers. Or put your foot down and then the second valve in the
carburetor (sp?) opened, and there it went.
It was a very cheap car what concerned maintenance. Who of you has
ever done 97 000 km with the front tires and 110 000 km with the
back ones. All of this without ever moving the tires or even the
tires and wheels around. And they were still legal, i.e. over
1 mm.
The problem then is obvious. When the right hand tire went, i.e.
it was worn out at the side after all those kilometers, mainly from
driving into the curb while parking, the bolts and the nuts rusted
together. That was an embarassement, having to leave the car behind
just because of a flat tire, with a brand new spare wheel in the
boot, 8^).
That was the first car I really enjoyed driving. Mind you this was
back in 75 up to 80.

Re .7
The RS3100 was a Capri!
There was a short lived "homo-special" called the RS1700T..that
had a BDA..and 4X4...'shame it didn't make it onto the streets!
Anyone remeber that one?..
Also has anyone got any more info/comments/stories on RS's?
I'm not "against" the "Sport" escorts 1600, 1300, but they don't
really come into the same category as the RS do they?
Comments?

re.9 I think someone missed the point.
Did anybody notice the deliberate mistake in .7? - Should be BDS,
not BDA, must have been thinking too much of Boreham.
What will I drive today, a Ford V8 Volante, a Chrysler Biturbo,
a Plymouth Countach or just the Vauxhall Esprit Turbo?

Hi Andy,
have mailed you and hope it gets there this time.
Funny how things turn out. The Lotus block was originally based on
the slant four Vauxhall engine.
My Aston Martin V8 Sierra has four wheel drive, four wheel steering,
active suspension. Goes like a rocket, handles like a pig. Interesting
brakes, as soon as you hit the pedal, the Cosworth rear wing comes
up as an air brake. Lifts the front wheels! I think the optional
parachute is better. Getting a retrofit James Bond DB5 kit on next
week so I carve up a few Porsche 959's.
For the record, it's got twin turbos and nitro. Looking for a Tornado
to blow off!
What spec is yours?
Cheers,
Colin K.

| I have an Aussie MkII RS2000 in Ford Sno White. I also now have a
black Sierra RS Cosworth but no way will I part with my MkII.
Question: Are these people claiming up to 190hp with normally
aspirated Cossie engines in their Escorts, fair dinkum? My Cossie is
supposed to have 150kW (about 200bhp) and that is on 9lbs boost!
Has anyone put a Sprintex on a 2.0 OHC?

| I know a chap who has just sold his Escort RS to fund further work on a
project involving a 3 door Sierra shell, Cosworth bodykit and spoilers
and a 2.0 L Pinto engine, with a turbo bolted onto it. Not sure what
the bhp from this will be though.

A Cosworth 2-litre engine (BDA or derivative) should produce about
100 bhp per litre in a highly tuned form (as fitted to RS1800s, etc).
The Cosworth headed GM 16 valve two litre is capable of 185 bhp in a
fairly mild state of tune, so 200 BHP should be easily attaianable.

| A friend of mine is running a 2 litre Cosworth in his MkII Escort rally
car. The engine was prepared by Nelson Engines. It runs twin 48 DCOE
carbs and produces 300++ bhp very reliably.
On the 'wacky' side - An artical in the current Performance Ford Mag.
has a MKV Escort with a Ford Cossie motor with 600++ Bhp.
Last years winner of the Verta Fast Ford Challenge ran an RS2000 with
a 540 Bhp cossie motor. (0-60 4.6 Sec. Max 155 Mph)
190 Bhp - Easy.
|
8.13 | Of course thats easy. | SAC::ADAMS_R | | Mon Apr 13 1992 13:58 | 8 |
| Ah, but these are normally aspirated and running carbs not injection.
The latest 'fast car' has a Cosworth engined escort which pulls a
rather dissappointing 16.5 second quarter mile. My MkII RS2000 with
twin 40's and a very mild but not standard cam did 16.43. I did a 16.8
with the standard carb. All with a single cam head.
