Hi, I have a specific problem to which I would appreciate suggestions. I recently moved to a rental home (2 levels). The screens in most of the windows are attached by hinges at the top of the window and two small clips which insert into grooves on the bottom. The screens are attached on the outside of the window frame. The problem? My cat loves to sit on the window sill and watch nature outside. As she relaxes, she tends to lean on the screen a bit. The result? The cat has now twice fallen from seperate second floor windows. Luckily, she seems fine physically but has been quite spooked. Obviously, I would like to rectify this situation, especially since she is an indoor only cat. How can I reinforce the screens without doing damage to the existing windows? Is there a type of clip which I might install to lock the screen into place? Thanks! Rick

Don't rely on the screen; your cat can easily go right through it. You need some stronger physical barrier. I believe I've seen grids on expanding supports intended just for this purpose at Home Depot. Steve | |||||

We've never had our cats go through the window. I don't know whether this is because our screens are stronger, or because our sills our wider (giving the cats plenty of room). The screens slide into two clips at the top, and our held in place by two latches a quarter of the way in at the bottom. I don't know that they generally lean on the screens, but they do attack them at night as the bugs taunt the cats from the other side. A couple of weeks ago I had a short lived scare as the cats were acting strangely by one of the windows, the way they do when there's a strange cat outside. As I got closer to investigate, sure enough a cat jumped up from the bushes and managed to reach the screen. Fortunately, it did no damage, though I'm not even sure how good a grip it had on the screen before it let ago - probably not much. Another thing we did to help was to put up home-made, window high tables at strategic windows, along with cat beds. This gives the cats even more space, as well as a comfortable spot to curl up when they get sleepy. The original motivation was to give them a viewing spot during winter, when the windows were closed, but they still take advantage of the space now. Gary |
