17.0. "HANDYMAN courses??" by SOLVIT::TRUBACZ () Mon Jan 17 1994 14:03

Is anyone aware of or have taken a general "how-to-fix-it" course.
This would be in general home repairs (i.e. leaky faucets, loose floor
boards, insulation, etc) I live in So. New Hampshire.

    Thanks

    Pauline

Sometimes you might find that a local collage will offer
some type of Home Repair class or Basic something, at night.
You might want to put in a call and see what they offer...

Check with your local Vocational High School for night courses. Some
run these if there is enough call for them.

I know the UMASS Lowell had one a few years ago. I don't know if they
still offer it. Give them a call.

Thought I saw something like this on the weekend, in Westford or Groton
(Mass). Will try to look it up when I get home, assuming it hasn't
    been pitched already.

Readers Digest put out a F-I-Y homeowner book. It's a hardbound
book with lots of detail & picture/drawings. It covers everything from
replacement of windows to adding an addition, coverting attic space to
living quarters, tearing down walls, etc. The cost ~$28.00 & available
at any bookstore. A good book to have for reference.

Just to let you know, I've been taking "notes". I will start by
calling the technical schools (i.e. Nashua and Lowell), and check out
    the Readers Digest book.

I'm also checking the Telegraph and Broadcaster for other courses.

    more suggestions welcome....

Nashua High may still have evening adult classes that serve the purpose. They
used to have plumbing, woodworking etc.

Can't find the flyer I mentioned in .4; Nashoba Valley Technical HS
phone is (508)-692-4711. Might be worth a call if you can't find
    something closer to home.

Don't some of the large "warehouse" hardware stores (Home Depot, etc)
offer DIY seminars occasionally? Or are you looking for something
that is more involved that this would be...

Gee, I'm in Nashua and would gladly take on more "students". Tuition is
free and you can intern on my 100 year old money pit for practical first hand
experience. New classes are starting all the time.

Monday we had a lab exercise on thawing frozen heating pipes, and Tuesday
night's class was on insulating heating pipes. We also had a demonstration on
thermostat installation.

Enroll now for a course on painting. You just missed the class on skim coating,
but that will be offered again in February. One of our favorite classes is in
removing double hung windows and refurbishing them.

We're taking registrations now for an upcoming class on plumbing.

What particularly did you have in mind?

    ha, ha. ha.....

Maybe I should take some "students" too.

Plaster patching is complete, but still some wallpaper stripping and
    painting to come.

re.10 - Hey! You beat me to it!

Pauline - I live in southern NH and I'm ALWAYS doing something. I'd
welcome help or just a bystander to talk to as I work or anywhere in
between. Lets see, in the next 4 weeks I'll probably be changing
akitchen faucet, wiring more lights and outlets in my shop, building
some more furniture, opening a wall, sheetrocking and who knows what
else. In the spring, I'll be running power to my garden shed and adding
lights and outlets, painting, fixing brick steps, putting in a fence
    and then a whole garage.

Add a little random element to it. Get a two-year old boy.
Sunday night's "heavy suitcase down the stairs" trick will
    need:

    	patching holes in sheetrock
    	repairing a banister
    	paint color matching
