| Supposedly, the phone number for Mass Buying Power is 617-770-0300.
At least that's what a friend gave me back in the summer when she was
looking for a new car.

752.3 | It's a scam IMHO | NETRIX::michaud | Jeff Michaud, PATHWORKS for Windows NT | Mon Jan 03 1994 14:53 | 6 |
| FWIW, my brother tried using that buyer power thing for a new
car and found it to be a scam. Not only did he have to goto a
dealership an hour in the boonies, the price was higher than what
the average joe could negotiate elsewhere. Ie. the only thing
it may be good for is someone who would otherwise pay the sticker
price (and believe it or not, some people do!).

It worked for us. One of the people I work with used them to
buy their new mini van. She felt it was a good experience and
told us about them. I had been doing my homework on buying a new
mini van (pricing, reading, comparing) and decided to give them
a try (since the service was free it wasn't going to cost me any
more to check them out) We ended up getting the mini van with all
of the options we wanted for $200 over dealer cost (yes I checked
it out) at a dealership that was fairly close to home.
But on the other hand we ran into the same thing Jeff's brother
did when we went to buy an alarm for the van. They wanted us to
drive an hour and a half from home to a dealership that wanted $400
more for the same alarm we could get at the place we bought the
van. The difference in price plus the fact that we could get it
installed before we picked up the van made it a simple choice.
Anyway, back to the original question. How does it work?
Here is a quote from the flier I picked up at the employee
store.
"HOW IT WORKS"
"Decide exactly the make and model car or appliance
you wish to purchase and call or write"
Mass Buying Power
4 Maple Street #6
Quincy, MA 02169
Tel. (617) 770-0300
Fax (617) 770-0381
"Mass Buying Power will send you a qualifying purchase
certificate telling you a dealer near you who participates
and what kind of discount you can obtain."
BTW: they will also send you a "comment card" to make sure the
dealer gave you the price that Mass Buy had negotiated with
them.
What the heck, the service is free so you can't go wrong by giving
them a call. If they try to send you out to the "boonies" just blow
them off and use the other options that are available to you.
(Whole Sale Clubs, Digital discounts, and the jillion and one price
guarantees that everyone offers)
Hope this helps,
Jim

752.5 | One more thing.... | 37994::KAYS | | Mon Jan 03 1994 17:00 | 17 |

After re-reading Jeff's note I thought I should add one more thing.
I'm sure that a person could negotiate the price down to what we
paid for our van. But this was much easier than playing the "jerk
around" games that some car salespeople like to play where you go
back and forth for what seems like hours (or days) and finally
agree on a price. I've done this before and you can get a decent
price but I usually end up having very little respect for the
salesperson that has to keep shlepping (sp) off to "check" with
his manager. This was just a lot easier and less stressful. We went
in, handed the salesperson our certificate told him what we wanted.
He showed us what he had, we picked out the one we wanted (we had
test drove enough already), he told us the price and we picked it
up two days later. It was that easy.

They'll accept your slip from MBP, but shop there first and
ask what the cost of the item(s) will be with the slip.
First off we filled our new home with all new appliances and
the mgr said "put theslip in your pocket, we're already below
what that would normally get you. Again, about a year later
we went for a large proj. TV and he said the same thing.

| A Mass Buying Power flier should be available from your Personnel Dept
with all the info you will need and answers to most of your questions.
Sometimes you get a good deal (bought a Chevy in '89 for under dealer
invoice) and sometime you don't. Make sure you know what a good price
is before buying. It's free, so give it a try.

| I used MBP several years ago to buy some appliances (refridgerator,
washer, dryer, dishwasher) at Hunter Appliance in Littleton MA. The
net prices were significantly cheaper than I could find elsewhere, and
I did shop around.
However, I've also tried to use it for some other stuff, which simply
didn't work out because the dealer was too far away or the deal wasn't
that good. Bottom line: after getting the list of dealers/deals from
MBP, call first.

Speaking of Percy's. I went there for a washer, dryer, and fridge.
Got their (supposedly) best deal on the lot. Took the list of items
with prices to Hudson (MA) Appliance (a small mom and pop type of
store) and asked if they could do better. Lo and behold, they either
gave me lower prices or a better product at the same price. I went
with Hudson Appliance. I called back Percy's to let them know I
decided to go with another store and they told me they could go even
lower than the price from Hudson Appliance. Why didn't they do that
when I asked them the first time.
Anyway, I've got nothing against Percy's. They give you a good deal I
think. Ill probably go back there for other things.
What does this story have to do with Mass Buy? Nothing really. Sorry
about that!

| Whatever your price quotes are, go to home depot and they will match
the price """PLUS 10%""""".
Just bring in the prices and they call to verify.
I just experienced this.
Good Luck

Just to make sure this is clear, this is an *extra* 10% off
the competitions lower price, not off the much smaller
difference (and hence worthless) that Lechmere & Circuit
City give.
I saved an *extra* $20 on top of $30 due to the competitions
*sale* price just three weeks ago on some vinyl flooring
(if this was Lechmere it would of been only an extra $3).
What was real funny (or sad) is that they willing gave me
the above (I don't even think they called to verify the
competitions sale price) they were real resistent to give
me a kitchen cabinat frame for the "marked" $70 vs. the
$74 they raised the price too (I look at the stickers below
the products, which they hadn't removed even though they
had updated the prices hanging from above).
For the most part, I've found the kitchen dept. folks
much ruder than other depts......
