1021.0. "Tools - Torque Wrench" by RANGER::DAVE () Mon Jun 07 1993 13:47

    Anyone know where I can purchase and which brand of torque wrench would
    do a decent job of removing and replacing a blade on my lawnmower - the
    manual suggests I use a torque wrench? I don't want to spend too much
    as I will probably only use it for this purpose...thanks!

    Personal opinion: use a regular wrench and it will work fine. I
    can see no need for a torque wrench for that application if you
    have even a vestage of mechanical sense of what "tight enough" is.
    If you want some indication, see what the torque spec is and
    adjust your efforts accordingly. For instance, 50 ft-lb is a
    force of 50 lb applied to the wrench a distance of 1' out from
    the nut; so estimate how long your wrench is, how much force
    you're applying, and you'll be close enough.

    		I agree. Unless you will be using it routinely don't
    		waste your money.

Or, if you're really nervous about it, rent one from your local
rental store.

    I like the human torque wrench. Anything under 30 ftlbs is careful,
    anythin from 30 to 50 ftlbs is good and tight, and anything over 50
    ftlbs is mimic the air wrench. this will get you through just about
    anything on an auto.

1021.5Remember to remove the spark plug wire19584::BPORTERTue Jun 08 1993 14:503
    Just remember to remove the spark plug wire when
    you put any body parts near the underside of your
    mower.
1021.6Get a cheap one for sparkplugs, and use for mower bladesTLE::TOKLAS::FELDMANOpportunities are our FutureWed Jun 16 1993 12:389
I picked up a cheap torque wrench (beam type) from Sears ten or
twelve years ago for under $20. I would use it for the
lawnmower blade, just because I have it and it's a safey
issue. But my primary motivation for the torque wrench is
for replacing spark plugs in engines with aluminum heads, where
it's real easy to ruin the head by overtightening. In that
context, I think the small expense is worth it.
