Cutting the hole is easy. The a hole cutting saw attachment for your
drill. Putting the fitting in may be a little tricky. You'll probably
have to glue a fixture in. I suggest a plastic fixture, it'll last longer.
Go to a decent hardware, and tell them what you're doing. They may be
able to help you out with the exact parts.

931.2 | threaded faucet worked for me | CPDW::PALUSES | | Thu Jul 30 1992 11:23 | 12 |

I did something very similar for a drip irrigation system using a
plastic 30 gal barrel. Basically I just drilled a slightly undersized
hole in the barrel with a regular wood drill bit. The attatchment I
made to the barrel was a shutoff valve/faucet with a threaded end. I
'threaded' the faucet into the barrel hole for a tight fit, had
oversized washers on each side of the barrel, and held it all down
with a bolt. I then gunked the whole thing up with roof cement. No leaks,
and it works great. Basically I can store rain water in the barrel, and
drain from it at will by opening the faucet at the bottom.

| Depending on what the barrel is made of, you may have trouble
gluing to it. If it's polyethylene, forget it. Your best bet
in that case (and maybe in any case) would be to make up a
sandwich of rubber washers and a nut on each side, if you can
find a fitting that will let you do that.
(Maybe some other noter knows of a glue that will stick to
polyethylene, but I sure don't.)

How about the fitting used to return filter water into an above-ground
pool? it's made to create a water-tight fitting through a thin wall,
and it accepts a 1.5" flexible hose.

Use a plastic 3" Flange - they are available at plumbing supply
stores (you may not get them at Grossman's. They are available with
both threaded and Solvent welded connections.
Since you dont care about small leaks, simply cut yiour hole in the
barrel and mount the flange with S.S. Screws- (you may have to pick
these up at a marine supply place)
Since it is only for grey water- I would simply drill a holor in the
barrel the same size as the OD of the pipe and simply shoen the pipe 2
or 3" into the barrel. You are probbaly going to put a bunch of hole
into the barrel to drain out teh gray water, so a little leak around
the inlet won't mean anything. OF course I assume you are going to
bury the barrel!
