1016.1 | Old House Journal markets one | SEESAW::PILANT | L. Mark Pilant, VMS Security | Mon Jun 10 1991 13:46 | 5 |
| Old House Journal has one they pitch that it supposed to be very good. The
ads say it is much better than most on the market. Caveat here: I have never
used it. I'll try and find the address and price.

| Another caveat: I know of a house that almost burned to the ground
because somebody was removing paint with a heat gun. The person was
working up near the eaves, and accumulated dust and crud of the
centuries up in the attic caught on fire. So if you do it, be
careful!!!

1016.3 | Solid (and heavy) | GEMVAX::RICE | | Mon Jun 10 1991 17:30 | 9 |
| I have both the heat gun and plate from OHJ. The heat gun works well,
but it is heavy. I actually find using the heat plate easier and faster
on flat surfaces; but you can scorch the wood easily. I also second the
warning in the previous note about setting the place on fire. I don't
like to lend mine out because I am afraid of someone doing that.
(coming from a family of firefighters, I am extremely cautious)

1016.4 | Where to purchase and any better suggestions? | ISLNDS::NIKITAS | | Mon Jun 10 1991 23:48 | 13 |
| Where could I purchase a heat gun and plate from OHJ (what does
this acronynm stand for?) and what's a good price?
I also come from a firefighter family and will check things out
with my insurance company too!
Thanks for the info and concern.
Is there a better or easier way to get paint off a house. My house
probably hasn't been painted in 15 years (about 40 - 50% will scrap
right off to the bare wood) and has 10 - 15 coats of paint on it.
Any suggestions will be of help.

1016.6 | OHJ heat gun/plate $ and # to order? | ISLNDS::NIKITAS | | Wed Jun 12 1991 10:21 | 10 |
| Being new to this notes file and not being a subscriber to OHJ,
could someone look up the number and cost of the heat gun and plate
that OHJ offers and post it in this note? Thanks
I'll be ready to start stripping by the weekend and need to order
something fast or temporarily settle for a non-industrial type
gun.
Thanks for all your help.

1016.7 | Milwaukee Brand at Spags. | SENIOR::HAMBURGER | Carvers are on the cutting edge | Wed Jun 12 1991 22:37 | 7 |

I have seen the Milwaukee brand heat gun at Spags, Olde School house, and
it looks "suyspiciously" like the OHJ model. Best guess is that Milwaukee
is the OHJ mfr......don't have the Spag price, but a visit might be quicker
than mail order, maybe cheaper as well....

1016.8 | OHJ price | GEMVAX::RICE | | Fri Jun 14 1991 11:49 | 12 |
| Last issue I have handy is DEC 90, and the gun is 77.95, heat plate
47.95 (including shipping). You can call them at 718-788-1700.
I don't think they were that high when I bought mine some years ago,
and at that time you could only find the "hair dryer" type ones in
the stores here. (Although I do use my light duty one for a lot of
stuff, especially when I had to unscrew all the old door hinges that
were caked with paint). Definately check out Spags

1016.9 | Bought heat gun @ sSpag's | ISLNDS::NIKITAS | | Fri Jun 14 1991 23:52 | 12 |
| I stopped at Spags on thursday and bought the Milwakee for $40.00
(main store). A clerk said that it was on sale two months ago
for $32.00 but I couldn't wait for a sale. I'll try stripping this
weekend.
Thanks very much for all the info.

P.S. There's a guy up the street who has been heat stripping his
250 year old home to restore it. This is his 3rd year and he will
probably go a 4th. Sure hope mine goes faster!!!!!!!!!
