If you want to spend thousands there are antique ones available
sometimes. The whole bar---3/4 square...usually 8-10 feet...
If you are interested in that, try The Barn in Hampton Falls, NH
or Griffins and Gargoyles, also in that area. Or for that matter
any place that carries 'architectural' antiques.

Jack,
I was also considering a similar project (just the bar) too.
So I will be monitoring this note for some suggestions. The basic
framing shouldn't be too bad, and I'll probably use barn board
for a face, but my question is "Does anyone know where I could
get a professional looking laminated top, say 24"w x 6-8' long?"
Or has anyone done this before and have recommendations for
materials to use and a good place to get laminates and suggestions
for cutting?
Any info. would be appreciated.

| You might try looking in 1111.17, Cabinets&Countertops. This note
should list a variety of suppliers of countertops and how to make them
for yourself.

919.7 | slab of pine | LEVERS::S_JACOBS | Live Free and Prosper | Tue Dec 26 1989 13:09 | 13 |
| Try Feuer Lumber on Rt 121 in Atkinson, NH (just east of Salem)
They have their own saw mill, and can make you a one-piece bar top
out of pine. They will even kiln-dry it for you, but it takes a
few weeks.
I know all this because last time I was in there the guy ahead of
me was asking them about getting a slab of pine for his homemade
bar.

919.8 | Recommendations... | AIMHI::SJOHNSON | | Tue Dec 26 1989 15:35 | 12 |
| I have seen these in a couple of places. Now to remember where. I
think 1 was in the Mill Store on Amherst St (probably pine)- call
first- that's in Nashua, NH and I'm pretty sure the other was at the
Stove/Basket Barn on 101A in Amherst- it was made out of wicker though.
I'll keep my eyes open as we have been interested also.
Sonia
P.S. My recommendations would be to check w/ some lumber yards or
unfinished furniture places, ei: Builders Square would most definitely
have something like this when you first walk in on the right hand side
of the store. They are also in Nashua on Amherst St. (101A).

919.9 | Place in So. Boston... | DNEAST::RIPLEY_GORDO | | Tue Jan 09 1990 15:38 | 13 |

I recently built a workbench and was looking for a slab
of maple. Someone I believe in the woodworking & tools notes
mentioned a place in south boston near the turnpike. I called them
and they had a bar they wanted to get rid of. In fact I believe
they often have this kind of stuff available at very reasonable
prices. Seems like it was about $35 for 6 or 8 feet? Real nice
too. You will have to look either in the telephone book under some
associated topic or search the wood working & tools notes file. I
know it's in there but don't recall the place. I ended up buying a
piece of bowling alley from a DECie from N.H.
good luck!

I'm the DECie (actually one of a couple) that sold the maple bowling alleys
for workbenchs/countertops/bartops. I actually have a couple left that I
might be willing to part with. Give me a call.

919.11 | read the labels | WONDER::MAHEU | | Thu Jan 11 1990 09:34 | 14 |

...in building your bar, be sure you use the proper finish.
Some finishes, like shellac, use alcohol as a solvent. So as you
can imagine, this would not make a good finish for a bartop. I
recommend using laquer. It's tough and resists alcohol. It can be
found in all types of desired sheens. It's best sprayed on, but
they do sell a brushing type.
So be sure you read labels so you know what to expect. Nothing
worse than finishing a nice piece of furniture only having to strip
it and rework it after 1 week of use.
