916.0. "BUILD/BUY FLAGPOLE" by WFOV12::TRUSTY () Tue Sep 20 1988 20:35
Does any-one have any experience with Flag-poles?
I hope to either build (or), if necessary, buy a pole.
To build is my preference, but I have not been able to determine
safe diameter, and type of pipe to use. Any engineers out there
who have experience and knowledge per stress and sway factors?
Steel pipe will bend and *stay* bent.
The base (footing),is not any problem, so I am asking only
for advice as to the Flag-post, itself. Plan to fly 3 x 5,
or if possible, a 5 x7 flag.
Previously, I had a flag mounted on the house, but strong,
storm winds snapped the 1/4" screws, and I'm not about to put any
more holes into the vinyl siding, to re-attach to the wall
stud. Any advice is appreciated.

| Try using aluminum irrigation pipe. That way you won't need wires
to support it.

916.3 | PVC pipe | CADSYS::RICHARDSON | | Wed Sep 28 1988 13:51 | 13 |
| Irrigation tubing isn't very strong (we hams use it to build antennas
a lot...). My ex-father-in-law made his flagpole out of PVC tubing,
with a toilet-tank-float glued to the top of it, painted white,
and a small pulley mounted just below it. The flagpole was in a
very exposed location at thend of his dock, and was often climbed
by the various (ex-) nieces and nephews with no problem. Also,
PVC pipe doesn't conduct electricity, which may be a concern if
your flagpole is going to be near your house.
A lot of hams put up a PVC flagpole with a vertical antenna inside
it (with ground wires buried under the base) if they live in
enighborhoods with silly zoinging restrictions on antennas - no
one objects to a flagpole!
