| I checked them out during the "grand opening" and found the
prices to be relatively high even considering the sale prices.
I still think G. V. Moores down the road is a better value.

| I agree with .-1. I stopped in and opened an account there.
The store is very convenient for me so I'm sure I'll use it
sometime, but unless the account includes some discount, I
think I'd treat the place as a Cumberland Farms which sells lumber.

The store is owned by Concord Lumber of Concord and has identical
prices for "cabinet grade" plywood. These prices are in the same
general range, some more some less, as Wickes-of Acton- and Wilson -of
Concord. They also offer some hardwood. The price for oak milled 4
sides is $5.75 a board foot, which makes it more than twice as
expensive as New England Hardwood which is just down the road off of
rte 495

Competition is getting pretty steep in these parts of the woods.
Somerville Lumber has a building going up on Rte. 27, a 1/2 mile
from Wickes toward Westford. Perhaps this will force them all to
lower their prices. Certainly must be lots of money to be made
in this geographical area from DIYers.

| Can .3 supply directions to New England Hardwood "which is just
down the road off of rte 495"? Is this a backyard place like Craftsman
Lumber in Groton, where you have to call ahead to make sure that
some one is at home?

NE Hardwood is south of Littleton Common off of Rt 2A.
From Littleton Common go towards Ayer on Rt 2A. Just past
Wayside Carwash (used to be an Exxon station) take a left
and go over a set of railroad tracks. If you pass San-Vel
gravel, you have gone too far on Rt 2A. Immediately after
the railroad tracks you will see the old Littleton RR depot
and a cross roads. Take a left. Go about 3/4 mile and
NE Hardwood is on the left... and yes this is a place that
you would be advised to call ahead to before you go.

I bought some rough oak Friday at New England Hardwood Supply. Their
latest price list follows. I called several dealers, including Palmer and
Parker in Tewksbury and Craftsman Lumber in New Hampshire. NEHS was by
far the least expensive. Their hours are M - F 8 - 5, Sat 9 - 1.

| nit to .4 ("And stay tuned for the new Somerville Lumber"):
It's actually 1/2 mile from Wickes towards Carlisle. Driving
north on Rt. 27 from Acton does not bring you into Westford.
The building is still in the planning stages, as far as I know.
Last thing I heard was that Acton voted not to extend the water
main up to the building site. Somerville Lumber countered by
saying they'd put their own well in, which got the Acton Water
Dept. upset since a private well of that size could draw water
away from the public well in that part of town.

Yes,it does. One might quibble with "north" but if one is driving
on rt 27 from Wickes toward Chelmsford the, first "town" encountered
is about 100 ft of Westford, then Carlisle then Chelmsford

| back to the original topic, one shouldn't sacrifice price for quality.
I bought ALL my framing materials at Concord Lumber and have been nothing less
than impressed with their quality. Also they have FREE delivery, something
Moore's never heard of! I spent close to $1000 on roofing shingles and still
had to pay an extra $.50/bundle for delivery! In fact, I treat Moore's like a
cumberland farms and only go there when I have to.
When I first opened my account at Concord Lumber, I brought in a price list from
Moore's which they handily beat.
Actually, the one place I've found Concord Lumber needs to get better in in
having sales. Although their prices for lumber are competitive, they rarely
have sales and consequentlty you CAN do better at places like Moore's on their
sales items.

I've also found Concord Lumber to have very high quality. Last
year I need 2 2"x6"x8' PT which I was going to rip into 1.5"x1.5"
pieces to make dowels from (that's another story). The yardman
helped me pick through a new pile until I found 2 pieces that were
CLEAR of any knots or other defects. Those 2 pieces were found
after looking at only 4 pieces in total. They also have a full
credit return policy on lumber that they deliver that can't be used.

| Concord Lumber is a first class organization with old-style knowledgeable
and helpful sales people.
They also have an amazing selection for a relatively small operation.
Full range of oak boards. 5/4 and 8/4 widths on oak and #1 pine.
Vert grain fir and redwood.
Their #2 pine looks like Grossman's select!

if you want to get real technical, north on Rt27 goes Acton,
Carlisle (about 100') Westford and then Chelmsford, the lights at
Rt27 &225 are in Westford.
