490.0. "Wanted:Advice on egg cooker" by ANT::MORRISON (Bob M. LMO2/O24 296-5357) Fri Dec 05 1986 10:05

I have been using egg cookers for 20 years and can't live without
one. The first two I used lasted for 10 years each. I don't remem-
ber how the first one wore out but the second one corroded through
the base. I bought one a few years ago and kept it on hand for a
spare; I started using it a year ago. I live in Hudson and the
water is hard. I noticed that metal powder was accumulating in it
much faster than it had before. I was concerned but didn't think
too much about it because the base was not deeply pitted. Yester-
day I noticed it was leaking badly. I took it apart and saw that
the base had corroded thru in several spots. I also noticed that
the metal was much thinner in the center than it was in the old
model.
An egg cooker is a real convenience. All you need to do is put
in the eggs and a measured amount of water, turn it on, and forget
it. When it has boiled dry it shuts off. It cooks with steam which
is twice as fast as cooking on the stove. Cooking on the stove is
a real bother; you have to set a minute timer for 15 minutes and
stay close enough to be sure it doesn't boil over and shut it off
when it's done. If I try to do it without a timer, I don't cook
them long enough and they come out runny, which I dislike.
I have been using Sunbeam egg cookers. My question is, is there
any other brand of egg cooker on the market? There are an awful
lot of people out there who don't like to cook (this includes some
working women) and I would think there would be enough demand for
an appliance like this to justify at least two brands. I mean two
different ones, not the same unit with a different brand name.
I'm hoping to find one that is more resistant to corrosion. A lot
of people have hard water.
I know I could buy bottled or distilled water and use it for
cooking eggs, but that's a bother and I'm trying to save as much
time as possible.

Sounds like this note should be in the consumer notes file.
