180.0. "Roof - Cupolas" by BERGIL::SEGER () Wed Sep 03 1986 17:48

I'm about to buy a cupola (for those who don't know what they are, they're those
funny things on roofs that have weather vains sticking out of them). I more
or less know what I want and I'm not particularly concerned with the
installation. What I want is the besy price!

I've looked in a BROSCO book (which virtually ALL lumberyards order out of) and
called several places with the model number. So far Mass Hardware gave me the
best prices at 10% off list. Anyone know where I can do better?

    Rivco in Nashua has lots of cupolas. I don't know how the
    prices are there.

180.2Keep it in Proportion3D::GINGERThu Sep 11 1986 09:388
    I cant help on price but just a plea for proportion. Ive seen so
    many totaly rediculious looking cupolas perched on rooftops. When
    you stand next to the nice looking coupla in the lumber yard it
    looks fine- try backing up about 75 feet and looking at it- it
    frequently winds up looking like a pimple on the roof.

    Just a plea for good proportion!

180.3made the plungeNAC::SEGERFri Sep 12 1986 15:3521
Well, I've ordered one. I was told that the best proportions are about 1 inch
of cupola to about 1 foot of roof. Turned out that the book listing them showed
usages next to each model. Oddly enough for a 24X24 roof they suggested either
a 27X27 (inch) short cupol or a 21X21 taller one. I opted for the taller one
because it looked better, was suggested for a 2 car garage and the next bigger
size specifically said something about industrial size building. But you ARE
indeed right about proportions.

About price, I found several merchants who give 10% off Brosco's list price.
In Mass I found mass hardware and in NH nashua lumber. I had also called
Chagnon in Nashua and was told 15% off. When i got there i was told they
usually only give 10% but if I was quoted 15% over the phone they'd honor it.

The cupol lists for 264 and I got it for 15% off. When the order was entered
into a CRT (wonders of modern science), I notice the clerk fill in a field for
COST of around $205 which quickly erased itself (not intended for customers but
I was too quick for them). Says something interesting about the amount of
markup on materials (around 30%) but I couldn't say if this is the standard
markup on everything.

They have strange hours on the weekend. Get there before noon on
Saturday. There's a place in the Millyard that sells unpainted furniture
and stuff. The also have inexpensive cupolas.

Ever see those DYI plans at your local lumber yard for garages, decks, dog
houses, picnic tables, etc? I noticed they have them for cupolas as well.

Might be a fun project...

180.13Cupola addressJURAN::KOZAKTue Sep 05 1989 16:0411
    I know of a place that you can purchase a fairly elaborate cupola
    for about $235. It is an octagonal ( 8 sided ) one that I put on
    the top of the gazebo that I built.

    I think that I still have the address etc., if you need it. They
    are extremely difficult to build unless you are quite experienced.

    Maybe you are quite experienced .................

    There's a cupola on a cape near PKO on Route 27 in Maynard, heading
    toward Sudbury, that is designed after the clock on the Mill. The
    house is on the right hand side when driving toward Sudbury.

    I don't know who owns the house, but it must be a DECcie.

    Nope, he is not a DECcie. The man who built the cupola is (was)
    a good friend; he passed away about 2 years ago. His son lives
    there now.

    THere's a neat store in Mansfield Mass- on School street, just off rt
    140. The country store- combiation old time country store, furniture
    store, gift shop. the have a fantastic selection of cupolas- fancy,
    plain. wooden roofs, shingled roofs, weather vanes etc. IT's worth a
    drive just to go visit the place. The owners collect and restore old
    mechanical istruments- nickleodeons, player pianos, all kinds of stuff
    that are always playing.

     If nothing else you can get some good ideas. a simple one should noty
    be hard to make- a more complex one requires more skills than I can
    muster.

    Can anyone advise a good place for these items. I thought I'd
    check Home Depot 1st.

    BTW, I'm in Central Mass., so Mass. & Southern NH would be fine,

    	I saw plans for a cupola in my local True Value store in
    Whitinsville Ma (Koopmans True Value) They were in a rack of various
    backyard build it plans under the name (U CAN BUILD IT) There were
    2 sets of plans for $5.95, Both plans were square and pretty basic for
    any home handyman.

    	I also have seen weathervanes in YANKEE MAGAZINE advertisements.

       I imagine you'd just have to notch out the wood to allow it to sit
    flush over the vent. That's what I was planning to do.

                   Mark
180.31notch the vent not the cupolaICS::STUARTWhatever it takes.Wed Dec 14 1994 08:5616
I would think it would be fairly simple to cut out the ridge vent
and fit the cupola between the cut out. The ridge vent is plastic
so a hacksaw would cut the shingle and the vent like butter.

nail down the ends of the vent and seal against the cupola with
roofing tar or silicone.

On my cupola the roof is cut out and screened inside so you get the
ultimate ventalation and no bugs.

my 2 cents

180.32Also at Mill Stores in NashuaSPEZKO::SWISTWed Dec 14 1994 11:0817
    I've recently seen Cupolas in Mill Stores on Amherst Street in Nashua.

    They have several sizes available beginning with 12" square on up.

    Prices vary of course, with the top-end model being around $88.00, add
    around $50.00 for copper trim.

    These are of course are unpainted and look as though they'd need a good
    finish sanding and dressing up prior to installation.

    Wrought-Iron weather vanes are also availble at this location.

    Hope this helps,
